THE EVENING STAR. ‘The dresses over silk slips are all the rage at the present moment in Paris, and every one knows what pretty and effective toilets white muslin god tarlaiam prove over blue. pink and mauve silk skirts. The thin skirts are trimmed this year with either a douillon or flounce ornamented with lines of insertion sewn on at regular intervals so as to form jantiog ines. These lines ure either guipure or Valenciennes lined with silk; embroidered straps are likewise used, but they are more costly, as they haye to be worked expressly. ‘The trimming is, of course, for white evening dresses, as for mourning wear black grenadine and while alpaca are worn over colored silk slips. The effect is very pretty, not in the least heavy, and decidedly novel. Both the grena- dine and alpaca dresses are trimmed with tongue-shaped straps of the same material piped al! round with satin. These straps are all cat separately: they do not require mach material, Dut a good deal of time, which is a qatier of calculation ouly with those who take their dresses at home. These materiai are likewise trimmed with rouleaux sewn each side of strays two inches wide. Grimp and jet are naturally too heavy for such light fabrics; butthey are still in high ‘avor for thick silks’ Ribbon sashes are only worn with mauslia and gauze dresses: for siiks, failles. &c., they are made of the same inaterlal, corded ail round, or otherwise edged. Theends are yery Jong and very wide, and are fastened so as to Joop up the skirt. I foresee a great invasion Ot gold in ladies’ toilets, and more especially in the still favorite black toilet, it commenced on bonnets, but ts not at all likely to be sta- tionary there. It is very pretty and up to the present time “very well worn.” Bonnets of all varieties are black and gold, irom thefan- chon, embroidered with jet, to the toquet, tilted oser the nove, which 2s how worn, is a perfect caricature A gold spray has quite dethroned the aigrette; its leaves may be scenon every Jady’s bat, either standing upright, or lying down on black velvet or black lace bows. The most tashionable leaves are those of the olive, the oak, and the laurel; small marguer- ites and buitercups are aiso worn, and ail these nre made in dead gold, bright gold being onl: Used for such fruit as bunches of grapes ai currants, or for evening head-dresses. Foliage is alto made of simple gold paper at a very cheap rate; so the great fear is that this pretty adotament will soon become yory common.— Correspondence Queen. A Nick Stats o¥ Soctety.—Last spring a man nained D. W Dawson, hailing from near Charlottesville, Virginia, a carpenter by oceu- pation, songht and obtained employment at s business in Edgecombe. He worked faith- fully, snd toail appearance seemed an honest and upright man, aud succeeded in gaining the respect of the community. But Cupid went to work, and the young man fell in love wih the Canghter of planter, waited upon her, and itis said became engaged. and the mar i.e ceremony was to have taken place jast Ta arsday bad not other events preventea it, Remor, however, had recently injured the reputation of the daughter, and some two we-ks ago Mr. Dawson, remaining for the nightin the house where resided his intended bride, Bird some one atrempting to enter the Ronse, apd .cizing @ gun near athand, fired into the intruder, wounding quite severely a negro man who liv’d upon the place. Later developrents have given to the com- munity fects wbich prove the existence of more than even rumor had as_ert-d. The ‘woman hed not only teen living in improper intimacy with her fature lord, but had, to the aston! -bment of the latter, encouraged an inti- macy with the regro in question, and for this Teason, it appears, the pegro was seeking an entrance into the houre when he was wounded. ‘The negro expozcd ine affair, which caused Dawson to go to Terboro’ to give himself up to the authorities for shooting the negro—the lat - ter threatening to bave him prosecuted —Daw. son riding @ very valnable horse belonging to AUCTION SALES. It will be remem- bered that the steamship Mississippi left here on the 2th of last month for New York, earrying some 25) Austrians, Belgian: other nationalities, being a portion of the sur- Yivors of the foreign legion of Maximillian’s army. The trip lasted eight days. and the ehip WAS quarantined for six days after her arrival. During the passage the yellow fever broke out among these people in its most virulent form, “and the mortality among them was fearful. Our triena’s correspondent says that nearly if not all of the officers of the party were carried off. Four of them he him- self saw committed to thedeep. The mortality amorg ‘he privates was correspondingly great. The toreigners were on deck, and eo great Was the fear of contagion felt by the cabin passengers that all communication between ihe cabin and deck was closed, many of the inmates of the former never leaving it during the entire trip. The correspondent says thai he raw many ofthe poor fellows sicken and die without having spoken to a singlé person. The men brought the secds of the disease with them from Vera Cruz, aud it is thought by many that the large influx ofso many of them trom that port at the particular time ‘was the cause of the sudden spread of the disease in this clty—New Orleans Picayune. A STRANGE CASE OF SHOOTING A YOUNG Lavy.—The Coxsackie News gives the parti- evlars of another act ina singular drama that has for some time been in the process of enact- mentat New Baltimore. On the 2ud June, a daughter of Mr. Philip Greene, of that town, ‘was shot and severely wounded by an un- known pereon. On the «th ot August she was again fired at through a window. The third ac: now presents itself. On Saturday iast Greene was again wounded by a pisiol The young girl, who is feeble from the of the previous wounds, was at noon time im the garden, when « man presented himeelf. utteredta threat with the emphasis of an oath, and fired, the ball en.ering her person. He atonce fled. The wound fortunately isnot gapgerous. The cae is shrouded in mystery. Some suppose that the man is known to the g:rl, but tbat for some of those strange reasons thet at times govern female conduct she will not divulge bis name. She, however, has made en affidavit denying ail knowlcdze of the man. The case will not admit the sus- Picion that might be entertained that it is one of ballucinaiion, or of fiction, for the reasons that the noise of the pistol hes been heard by others, and tbat veriiable wounds have been ‘made ‘at each time. The peculiar circum- stances of the case excite unusual interest in the locality.
