A man from Cincinati, who gives the name of Bab- cock, proceeded to the premises occupied by Frack Howard, at Nes Alden sitest, and Attempted to murder a female inmate of the premises, with whom he seems to have been Previowsiy acquainted. Babcock drew a revolver and fired three shots at the woman. Although in close proximity to his intended victim she escaped unscathed. Bancock then turned tne weapon upon himself, and shot himself through the right cheek. ‘Producing aknife, he next stabbed himself three times in the left breast, and fell fainting to the floor. ‘The wounded man was removed to the Maasa- chusetts Hospital, where ne was properly ested for. His cordition is looked upon as critical. It has been ascertained that he wrote two letters, one to bis mother and the other to. person unknown, before seeking to com- mit the crime.
