peel THE EVENING STAR. Musquitees. ‘The Philadelphia Ledger says:—The unusual a mount of rain doring the present season has had the natural effect of increasing the usual supply of these insects, until in some sections of our city they Baye becomea veritable to: ment. Our readers will, therefore, doubtle: thank us for any suggestions for preventing their noc tarnal Stincls, to even my ite light degree, however impossible it to kee them off altogether. Of the various remedies, propored, none are so efficacious as the use of ‘moequito netting in the windows and around the beds at night. Butas this is not always practicable or convenient, we must resort to other means for bidaing definance to our ene- mies. eee, the best is the smoke produced by burning 8 small quantity of what is technically called, “Persian Insect Powder.” ‘Tis consists of the powdered flowers, and perhaps young stems and leaves, of » plant known to botanists as Pyrethrum caucasicum, & kind of chamomile cultivated) largely in Ger- many, resembling the common garden chamo- mile in many of itgproperties, and of which all the various “insect,” “magnetic” and “fly” powders are wholly or entirely composed. use against mosquitoes, a small quantity about what could be heaped upon an old-fash- ioned silver dollar, ifany of our readers re- member the size of that coin—is placed at bed. time on a plate. and the top of the heap touched with a lighted match until it shows a red eoal. ‘The mass will then smoulder gradually away, filling the room with a lightsmoke, which nar- cctizes the mosquitoes and keeps them quiet for several bours, after which it may be ne- cestary to Tepeat the operation. The evolu- tion of the smoke will be facilitated by stir- ring the burning powder from time to time, so Asito secure perfect combustion, althongh this 1s not absolutely essential. The powder may be also, twisted up in @ light cylinder of paper, and burnt in that form. Its use, as described, against {musquitoes, gnats, &c., has long been Known to the Chinese and Tartars. who mouid it into sticks and burn in their tents, and dwellings, which would in many cases be uninhabitable without it. The same sub- stance, in its powdered state is also used to great advantage in preventing the attacks of roaches, bed-bugs, flees, ants, &c., and in keeping flies off the dining tables. It is per- tectly harmless to mankind, and may be eaten as freely a8 chamomile, and the smoke is not at all Injurious. This latter, 1t may be men- tioned in addition, has much the same effect on flies as on mosquitoes—not destroying them, but merely throwing them into astipor. As we stated a day or two since, carbolic acid, poured upon a rag and bung near the bed at night, also acts yery favorably, by its pewertul odor, in keeping away mosquitoes. ‘This is, however, more disagreeable to m persons than the smell of the burning insect powder, which resembles that from a mild cigar An excellent portable mosquito net for sleep- ersis found in the patent article sold in the the stores, consist ing of a gauze net, like a pil- Jow-case, distended by boop-skirt wire and pulled over the hedd. When lying down the oops Keep the net trom the face and permit iree respiration. A Romantic Incident. [Atlantic City Cor. of the Cincinnatti Gazette.) A romantic incident eccurred here last week, ‘which has been thus related to me:—A young man from Philadelphia lost bis Reart to & pretty girl from that city, whose father was president of @ prominent bank ther, and very wesltby He was a salaried clerk, though of very good family, and was unwilling, onac- count of his poverty, to prepose marriage, even though he bad reason to believe his pas. sicn was returned. He made this confession, itseems, to one of his friends, and the story of his modesty and pride reached the young lady’s ears, and touched her, yery naturally. A few weeks atter, the fair Philadelphian ‘was driving on the beach alone, when her horse became frightened at the surf and ran off aa furious pace. She lost all control of the terrified animal, which had run at le: miles. when the enamored swain, ext it happens in romances, chanced to be by the border of the s Would put it, thinking of the cheerless fatare ‘witout the idol of his soul (for further sopho- morical phraseology see Silvanus Cobb, Jr.) In a few moments he held the horse's head; was dragged a few buvdred yards before he could check the snimal’s course, and then snatched the half fainting girl from the vehicle. Once in_bis arms she swooned wholly, of course. He held her in his embrace until recovered. She murmured her gratitude; bis passion. and they walked to the hotel with rosy blushes all over their faces. bat night the wealthy father heard of his daughter's rescue, and, after talking with her, discovered that she loved the fellow. How wss she or] to know anything of thestate of your heart unless you told her about it? The narrative is nota whit original or new, except in the fact that the pater-familias has sense enough to prefer his daughter's happi- Bess to superfinous riches. 1 would like to give his name for the benefit of example.
