THE EVENING STAR. OFFICIAL. Dara2TMENt? oF Stare, Waerineron, September 16, 1867. Information has been received at this De- partment trom Mr. M. EB. Hollister, tne Con- aul of the United States at Buenos Ayres, of the death, on the 2ist of April iast, at Buenos Ayres, of Joseph Thompson. DsragTMent oF STATE, Wasnineton, September 16, 1967. Information bas been received at this ive- partment from Mr. M. E. Hollister, the Con- of the United States at Buenos Ayres, of th, on the 17th ot April last, at Buenos Ayres, of Alexander Robinson. —-~<e-—__ Dress and its Eccemtriciti London Society thinks that it would be well jor humenity if some one would, in the rela- Uon of fashion, keep a record ilinstrated by photographs of the changes in ladies’ dress from year io After mentioning the origin of crinoline is a disguise for the condition of the Empress Eugenie, previous to the birth of the Prince Imperial, it sa; Is itnot singular thata fasbion so unive! sally adopted by vomen of all ages and condi- tion, married and single, should have such an origin! Surely one would have predicted of it Deforeband that it would have been rejected ‘with disgust and scorn. Instead of which it as been welcomed, is universally adopted, and paconsiy. tained, in spite of the remon- atrance, seers, and dislike which it has Continually provoked, and notwithstanding the attempts made from time to time to lay it aside of bring {t into disrepute. Our eyes Baye become so accustomed to it that, when ‘we meet with any of those limp, straight-down figures which are the result of disguise, we are startled and shocked, as if some of the “corps de ballet” were walking abroad in the noonday. We are disposed to exclaim against them ss an iniringment of the Inws of decency. We are indeed strange mortals, to be so much creatures of habit that, If our eyes are ac- icmed to one state of things we are intoler- ant to any other, without any particular re- gard to the fitness and propriety and decorum of thatto which we have suffered ourselves to come babituaied. In time we might get d 10 any costume, however short and acanty. It isa dangerous state of things, and ‘we think that modern society shows that it is 20. Some curious details are given of how “rounded” figures are supplied to whom Na- ture has only granted angularity of outline. To acccmplish this end, artificial abdominal addenda are supplied and supplemented with a fub-doreal protuberance to preserve the bal- ance of symmetry. Ladies objected to these attachments at first, but they subsequently sub- mitted to them. The first of these attachments ‘was styled a renfre. A lady calling on the male dresemaker, who is common in Paris, to try on a gown, caused that worthy artist 10 raise his bends in horror, “Madame, you have no ventre.” The lady being young and unsophis- tieated, would not believe that her figure needed any such artificial aids. But at last the artist called * Appor le _ventre de Madame la Princesse de —— et de Madame la Marquise de -." She was overwhelmed and silenced. She submitted. The contrivence ‘was fixed on, the dress was strained over it, and she waiked forth a plump and comely dame, aad the rotundity of her form almost put ber toshame. 11 was then that she had to sit down. stand up, walk here and there be- fore the dressmaker's critical eye, that he might detect any fiaw there happened to be in the costume which he had prepared for ber. So the storv rums. Se non ¢ vero ben trovato. DISEASE AND CARELESSNESS.—There can be no doubt that carelessness is the origin of most @iseases. Medical men also hold that foolish People who follow their own whims have ardly a chance of recovery when visited by serious disease. Nine-tenths of the doctor's ‘work would be done if people were only con- sistently prudent and cautious. Only it is so ‘ard to be habitually cautious. On abundant ©ccasions a man may be most elaborately pru- dent, and then, to his utter astonishment, he dangerously imperils his health by some startling impropriety. When he has used every imaginable pains he is always amena- Die to the force of accident. There is another plausible theory, strongly antagonistic to the one we have named, to the effect that every moan has the seeds of some particular disease m his constitution, and some trifling accident will come, sooner or later, which will have tor him the same effect as a match falling upom gunpowder. Medical men explain this on theories of con- stitatiopal tendencies or of some poison latent am the system. The fatal accident to one man is the merest accident for another. Two men while walking get well soaked by the rain. One man shakes off the water pretty much as dog ora duck might do, and rather enjoys his shower-bath than not. Another man is taken il] of inflammation of the lungs, and Probably dies. The doctors cannot expiain the different issues. and they would also be very much puzzled to give a satisfactory account of the pneumonia itself. Thev will, indeed, gen- erally explain diseases by theories more or less Plansible. and practice has been built upon theory, and theory bas, no doubt, sacrificed a pumber of human lives. Yet medicine must ave its dogmatic system, ard without itmed: cine becomes little better than empiricism.. Lendon Soci THE Lonvon WoRKINGMEN’S ASSOCIATION. An address to the workingmen of London re- cently appeared, purporting to be an official exposition of the objects of this association, and signed by George Potter as president, and |. Hartwell as honorary secretary. This doc- ment possesses a novel interest as marking uc.ier step in thé BPPlcation of the associa tive principle. In the opening paragraph the London work gen are reminded that by means of association they have procured better wages, have re- duced the hours of daily laber, and have been “enabled to wring trom areluctant Parliament an instalment of the political rights ot the ‘Tae tranchwe, however, is but a ‘peop! ‘means. “ise énds which the workingmen can secure with it, if they learn its right use, are, we read an this document, « the protection of their prop- erty—their Jabor—against all encroachments. ne matter from what quarter they may come,” and their own elevation “in the moral, social, nd inteltectual scale.” To teach this right ‘use of the franchise, and to obliterate the traces of the class legislation of the past as speedily as porsible, are, it is asserted, the controlling ideas of the aseociation. It desires not to be mistaken for a political ‘society or @ trades-union, for it unites some of their characteristics with others which are en~ rely foreign to them. It is actively engaged 4a “procuring the political disenfranchisement and promoting the social interests of the work- ing classes. B visit to his friends, and was ont fishing, when he fell overboard.
