THE EVENING STAR. A Deceiving Lot eight years of age, looked mach ad 3 pee of hands that showed no ical toil, nee seems to woman in question, who is forty-five years old, by strict frugality and unremitting work, Bad saved some money. Wood paid his addresses to her ++ with He said that he could not marry there was a Mrs. Wood in the way, & pending divorce was ter- minated she sould take the place of his di- vorced wife. Tn the meantime, however, the deluded woman was given to understand that she was to reside upon his farm as his housekeeper. ‘This was satisfactory to the “intended wife:” Dut she didn’t much like the aspect of things when Wood so frequently borrowed her money and didn’t return it. On August 15th he in- ereased his existing indebtedness in the sum of 50. He said that he bad brought three horses to the city to sell, and that the Market Street Ratiroad Company bad them on trial. The woman demurred at lending it without se- curity, but the Lothario actually drew up & bond for $1,000, and with ber went before an #iderman and executed it. He next borrowed ‘he wateh of bis dupe, and subsequently ob- daimed all the furmitare of her room, and four sronxs ful) of apparel and bed linen, on pre- tense of removing them to the farm where she was firet to be installed as housekeeper, and aiterwards as mistress. id storm favored the knavery ot the . Wood said that he was stopping at 1th and Cabot streets, but nad no permanent home. Ga- Strike of Factery Girls im Alleghany. Considerable excitement, says the Pittsburg Advocate of the 2d inst., prevailed at an early henr this morning in the vicinity of several of the cotton factories in Allegheny. All the girlsin the Anchor and Eagle Mills, except those employed in the weaving department, were out on a strike against 8 reduction of ‘wages. Some time since, a reduction of twenty yer cent. had been announced in the Anchor ‘ills, on Robinson street near Federal: but a similar reduction not having taken piace at some of the others—at least not in the Eagle Miiis, on Sandusky sireet_the former were obliged to return to paying their old wages. An agreement has since been arrived at be- tween the preprietors of the different mills, And on last Saturday the Anchor Milis simal- taneously enforced the reduction. On arriving at the mills this morning, the girls had a con- sultation and concluded not to go to work. A iarge number of those at the Eagle were jomed by some seventy-five or more of the AneBor, who came marching up Robinson street by double file, making considerable of a jenstration. police were sent for by some of the proprietors, and between them and the representations of the superintendents and bosses, the girls were induced to go to work again, and by nine or ten o'clock the mills were all running again, as we are informed, atthe reduced wages. Our informant on this point, however, is no! positive, and quite a number of reports ‘were afloat in regard to the strike. It is stated that they have been work- ing twelve hours per day and receiving four dollars per week, and that they struck against & propored reduction to three dollars, and de- manded ten hours for a da: ms work. Betore £0ing to work in the Eagle the girls in 8 body repaired to the Penn Bie but what the difficulty was there, we were not informed A STRANGE ADVENTURE ON THE PART OF A Yours Lapy.—A few days since a woman went to East Saginaw, in this State, and issued ndbills announcing that M’lle Filanora Shondon would walk a rope stretched across Genesee street, at 6 o'clock p.m., Tuesday. The Jady appeared ina role de Hallet but seemed Yery timid, and after awhile, seeing her awk- Wardress, the authorities interposed and stopped the performance. Ou Thursday an gentleman came to town in a state of great excitement, inquiring fora missing daughter, who answered the description of the rope ‘walker, and stated that she bad left home sud- denly a few days previous, and that her peo- bas feared foul play.
