I o estimate At the lowest, and the fence fy the least. pos- sible fence that will turn stock. The cost then 4s $1 28 per rod, or $415 24 per mile, or more than $I0 an secre on a forty-scre tract. But sucha fence will require yenb wine 88 cian, as once in ten years, so that the cost of k ing up the fencing on a forty-acre tract would be equal to paying off a mortgage of $10 per acre every ten years. «It is this emermous outlay and drain which bas driven our farmers to hedging, and almost exclusively with the Osage orange. Hedge plants are extensively grown by nurserymen and others engaged in the businese, and the plants seit from $2 to $5 per thousand. There oer. who contract to make hedges, but ine betier and surer practice seems t be tor the farmer to grow his own plants, and raise and trim his own hedges. The cost of the for- mer per rod ] have heard estimated at from 50 cents to$1, at four years old—I should put at the highest figures. The Osage orange does well here every where, except in standing water. Inthe old, unpruned hedges herea- bouts the female trees, which are few in pro- portion to the male trees and a more vigorous bubit, bear good crops of Osage orange annu- ally.and the seed ripens and vegetates as ‘well as that brought from Arkansas, the home ottbe Bois d’Arc. In five or ten years the tace of country will be a good deal the hedges, and I suppose at the end of that time we shall have experienced some change. Hedges are great protectors, if not breeders, of all kinds of vermin, destrac. tive alike to grain and fruits, and if they are found in some measure to’ ameliorate and modify our climate, 1 fear these advantages will be more than compensated for by the protection they afford to rabbits, rats, mice, birds and insects. Fatal Accidents from Mowing Machines. ‘The great number of serious and fatal ac- cidents waich are reported every year as arising from carelessness in handlizg mowing machines, or from drivers being thrown off from their seats in front of them, has led to much thought, both on the part of conscien- tious manuiacturers and others. to :prevent such occurrences. Some mowing machines are pecnliary liable to tarow the driver off on going over rough gronnd, or when the cutter bar strizes a fixed obstacle. They should be avoided by purchasers, as one would any treacherous, dangerous thin; When acci- dents occur and are reporied in the papers, abe name of the machine should be given. We should like to publish a list showing the num ber of each machine in use, the number of accidents to those using them, could a tair one be made out. Some years ago Iady of Pertieeios, N. J. invented an arrangement for throwing the knives outof the gear the instant the Griver’s weight was taken from the seat. We never kuew ofits being put to use. There bave been several other guards contrived, generally, however, not applicable to all ma_ ebines. “We received a suggestion ina letter from Mr. J. S. Hammond, of Sesrsdale, which we Yegard as eminently practical and sensible, and believe it will be the means of saving many lives and limbs. Hesays: “As the mowing seasen it idly approach- ing. I desire to make known @ simple device, which 1 have employed during two seasons, to prevent being thrown from my mowing machine. It is well known that serious acci- dents have been thus produced. It is this: 1 take @ strong leather strap, about thirty imebes long, and passing one end between the bars on the left side of the seat, (generally of en iron-work,) buckle, so as to make a loop. ut the left arm tnrongh this loop. Let the Joop be long enough to allow free useof the arm in driving, and at the same time to steady the body. The right arm must be free to work the mschine. Should the machine strike a hidden obstacle, the strap will prevent the ricer from being thrown to the right side, or forward, upon the knives, and will inmost casesenable him to keep his seat. Properly adjusted, it will not interfere with the man- agement of the team or the machine.”—Amer- igan Agriculturis! > The New York police have been paying attention to the lottery swindlers, and on Wecnesday crushed two of them—one a pre- tended Masonic affair, and the other a grand gitt scheme. 87 The editor of an lowa paper says that the heavens were black. one day last week, with wild geese flying South, and conse- guently presages that winter will be here in September. ws?
