Yesterday, om invita- Mi y King William, ne accom- panied Count Von Bismarck to the royal resi- dence a: Poisdam, where he was received with unusual attention, and had an interview of over three hours’ duration with the king and bis prime minister. In the evening Mr. Ban- croft dined with his majesty, who afterward took him beck to Berlin in the royal carriage. A Singular Story. ‘The real circumstances of the death of that ie and accomplished Princess, the one Tay of sunshine amid the gloom which bangs over the Austrian Court, have been kept secret from the public, but are well Snown to the initiated. 1t seeme that the poor Princees, who had accepted the sacrifice which Bad been demanded or her, and consented to serve-as holocaust to appease the god of dis- cord by uniting berseifin marriage with Prince Houmburt, of Savoy, had been told that the Prince's passion for smoking would render all companionsbip with him impossible unless she possersed the same fondness for the odor of to- Bacco as the Duchess de Valencay, who insist- ed on sitting with her bair combed down in her husband's smoking room so that her ring- Jete might be impregnated with the fragramce. Now. itso happened that the Prineess had a peculiar objection to this very odor, and had been advised, as the only meaus of combating it, :O learn to smoke the mild cigars used by the ladies of Havana. Her apprenticeship had just begun, but her father, the Archduke Alber!. having ex- pressed his entire dislike of the unfeminine astime, the practice was carried on in secret. be day of the fatal event. which filled all Vienna with sorrow and dismay, the Princess ‘was standing at an open window of the Pal- ace, erdeavoring to overcome her dislike of the cigar, by puffiog away with determined vigor, when suddenly, her father appearing below tbe balcony, and looking up to salute her #s he passed, she flung the burning end of tbe cigar over her shoulder, lest he should per- ceive it, and bent low down to return his sa- lute. The cigar bad fallen among the flounces of her muslin dress: the movement had created current of air, and inan instant her dreas was in flames. Court logicians, who love to fatter their own prejudices by seeking a reas- onable foundation for them, have fostered the superstitious feeling in the mind of Empress Etizabeth with regard tothe Emperor Napo- leon by proving that here, again, Fate has been at work with the same intention as when she presided over Solferino and Magenta, for, had not Victor Emmanuel been established. King of Italy by the Emperor Napoleon, there had been no likelibood of the alliance with Prince Humbert; consequently no need to practice the art of smoking to overcome the ‘wholesome prejndice experienced against it, and consequently the dreadful catastrophe would not have bappened.—/aris Correspond- ence of the Court Journal. A wom Kills her Sister-in-Law with a Table-Knite. {From the Salem (1nd.) Times of Aug. 22d.) The most shocking affair that ever trans- pired within the bounds of Washington coun- ty. was committed in Gibson township, be- tween the bonrs of fiveand six o'clock on the morning of Tuesday last. The particulars, 80 far as we have been able to gather them. are about as follows: Jane Williams, an anmar- Tied woman, and aged perhaps forty years, Tesides with a married brother im the vicinity of Little York, a village in Washington coun- ty. Her brother, Wm. Williams, having some Dusiness with one of his neighbors, left his wife and sister, the only occupants of bis own house, and walked over to thatot his neighbor, And while absent, his sister attacked Mrs. W with a knife. while she was engaged in pre- Paring breakfast, inflicting several savage curs about the throat and neck, cutting her threat from ear to ear, severing the windpipe entirely, and, in fact almost severing the head from the body. Mr. Williams, who had not yet been absent half an hour, returned. when his sister met him at the gate and informed him ef the terri- ble deed she bad committed—saying that she bad killed bis wife and was going ont afterthe neighbors. Her tale. of course, seemed in- credible to Mr. Willams, but when he entered the house be found his wife, whom he had left but a few moments before in perfect health, a ghastly, bleeding corpse upon the floor. The immediate cause or causes which led to the Dloody deed we are not prepared to relate. but it is ‘Said that the parties have never lived agreeably together, and that this petticoated tend bas contemplated the deed she executed op Tue: \y Morning for over two years. Mrs. Williams, we are informed. often left bome m the absence of her husband, fearing ‘iolence at the hands of this sne-devil. A vein of insanity is said to have run through the family of the murderess, but it does not seem to us that this act could bave been committed im a fit of insanity, when she has bad the life ot victim in View for so longa time. As ‘we have before stated, she acknowledged the deed from the first, and said that as God was the head of all things. so must He be at the Read of this. The murderess was brought to Salem, and lodged in jail at about 5 o'clock on the day of the murder. and not until the mas- #1ve prison door had creaked on its iron hinges did she manifest the least concern about the awful crime she had committed. — WF Maggie Mitchell made £16,000 last year.
