In the Episcopal Diocesan Convention held in Chicago last week, a resolution was adopted instructing tbe Deputies of the Diocese in the next General Convention “to procure by gen eral canon law, with suftable qualifications, a prohibition of the use of the marriage service of the church in cases where either party con- templating marriage shall have been pre- viously divorced by the civil law on grounds other than that of adultery.” The Deputies are also instructed to procure a rule of duty to be followed by clergymem whose services are thus applied fer in ascertaining the facta bearing on euch prohibition. Of course this is purely a denominational matter, and the Proposed canen could have no other effect than to cast the moral influence of the church in the scale against the marrit of persons divorced, unless the divorce was granted on the ground of adultery. A person divorced on any other ground could not pro- cure the services of an Episcopal clergyman, but if he should not be supposed to submit to the rule of the Church in the matter, he would have only to go to a civil magistrate. or a cler- gyman of some otber denomination, to be married. The only restraint exercised by such arule, would be the moral and spiritual re- straint which the solemn rules of the Gnurch presumed to exercise over the minds aud conduct of its members, and such other per- sone a8 might be influenced by them. Of course the action of the Episcopal Uon- yYention can bave noefficacy, save among tho clergymen of that denomination, but asa step taken in conformity with the views of the Church of Rome, the fact is worthy of note. Also, as a protest against the laxity on the enb- ject of divorce, which had been evinced in who wasalso sensibly affected, replied to Win- more :—“Farewell; 1 have had to do, but I conta do noth! ommend you to God, who will do you jus- oe.
