THE MORALITY OF THE PRIZE RING. Some of the joornals, which published a full and circumstantial account of the prize fight at Aquia Ureek, seasoned the same with edi- torial comments on ‘the brutal and disgusting exhibition; while others gave the particulars of «the mill” on one day, and a moral essay on the demoralization of the prize ring on the mext. Of course prize fighting 1s immoral and unchristian, but whenever a paper publishes & murder case, the editor does not think it necessary to inform his readers that killing is crime. A prize fight has the same interest, and is as much a matter ef news, as any other offence against society, and because a paper publishes an account of crime, which is mat- ter of interest, and excitement in the ¢ommu- nity, it, of course, does not follow that the conductors of the paper approve the particular act reported. eee TI2% 10.40'S 0.0 110M = 7.30’s, Augu: 106% 7.30’s, June. 5.20"s, 1965... 107 1.308, Jaly 5.20's, Jn.&Jy,'65.109% Gold ae FINANCIAL, Lewis Johnson & Qo, quote Stocks ana Bonds in home and foreign markets as follows. We would sugges}, however, to our con emporary, who modestly claims to have been first on the street ‘with the result of the prize fight, that plausible fiction would serve its Purpose better. The factthat the Stak Extra, amnouncing the re sult of the fight, was out more than an hour in advance of any other paper is known to so many thousands of our citizens that any counter claim will eerve only to discredit all utterances from the same quarter. a et &7 They seem to have the same difficulty in getting juries in New York that we have in Washington. The New York papers state that on Monday last the judges of four of the courts were compelled to adjourn on account of the lack of the necessary jurors; and on Tuesday a fifth court was compelled to ad- journ. The New Yorkers do not care for fines nor anything else, and, when summoned on juries, stay at home—a Proceeding that illy comports with the character of a good citizen. Already some-of our most substantial citizens, who have purch4sed pro- perty and settled here within a few years, are talking of leaving unless something is done: Many of the sidewalks on other streets are in such @ condition as to force tritns on to the carriage-ways—the east side oi (treen etreet, for instance, above Bridge street, which is the way of approach to the pubiic schools, and in wet weather is almost impassable. It has been suggested that owners of real estate bere, on the back streets, be allowed to adopt the same plan at their option, as it werks well where it bas been tried. Thesub- ject will be brought before the Corporation at ‘an early day TE PROVISION MARKETS.—The markets this morning were largely attended, and the supply offered was of excellent quality and ample. The fruits and vegetables offered at the stalls by the license dealers, brought from the farms ef Maryland and Vilginia, were equal to the offerings in the Washington mar- kets, probably, iz_many instances, portions of the same crops. The country dealers too were numerous, and their stock displayed to ad- vantage, was creditable to the gardeners of the District and the adjoining counties. The prices were moderate, varying but little from. those quoted in the principal markets of Washington. CoaL SHirMENTS.—There has been Ro lack of vessels this week, and the only complaint heard was thatthe receipts from the mines were hardly fast enough for the shippers to freight the vessels as fast as the works are eapable of doing. The shipments of the Bor- den Co. amounted to 2,154 tons; Cumberland Co.. 2.200 tons; Ray's docks, 4,600 tons. A large number of vessels are lying at the wharves to receive cargoes during the coming week.
