SF BEADING MATTEB ON BVERY PAGB. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHEB MATTER. SLLIGENCER AND THE POINT OF =En INTELEGRS ROAD AGAIN. The /n‘elligencer, in prosecuting its interested Wwarfsre—we should say ““venal” or «‘merce- nary” warfare, perhaps, were it mot to rob that paper of its stock expletives—uapon the Baltimore and Obio Railroad, essiys almost invariablyto indulge its en vious spleen against us by lugging in the name of the Star. W® have explicitly told the Intelligencer that we have no interest whatever in the forcunes of that road further than the general interests of Washington are concerned in the construction of the Points of Rocks branch. If the Intelli- gencer had a single attribute of manliness or honesty, it would ether undertake to make good its ineinuatiens or abandon them. But we have to say to that paper that if expects us to look on quietly and permit it to sacrifice the interests of Washington for the benefit of its lobby gang, it slightly mistakes its eus- tomer. The JIniciligencer prates about the “organship” of railroads. lt seems to have the meaning of the phrase by heart. Has it ever essayed to be the organ of any road! Has any road failed to come to terms with itselt or its lobby gang? What is the mysterious cause of its continual din of abuse against the Balti- more and Ohio road? Wnhat is the secret of its ‘wonderful inconsistency in laborimg through the whole session of Congress to impede the construction of the Point of Rocks road, and in now berating the Company for not going on with the work? How can the Intelligencer ex. pisin its similar glaring inconsistency in at- tacking the Baltimore and Ohio road for bad faith in not prosecuting the work upon the Point of Rocks road, whileit sees no fault in the Baltimore and Potomac Company, which claimed to have a large number of men at work in constructing its road durimg the ses. sion of the Legislature of Maryland, and now does not even pretend to have any working parties. The fasts are that the Baltimore and Potomac road dismisced all the laborers about the time the Legislature adjourned, and now claims only to have engineers engaged looking for a line, Whilst the Baltimore and Ohio road bas contfaued without one moments delay to prosecute vigorously the heavy worka: Parr’s Ridge on the Point of Rocks road, where large quantities of earth and rock have bcen exca- vated without any intermission whatever. Doubtless the Baltimore and Potomac company can satisfactorily explain the e<use of their fail- ure to prosecute the work, but we submit tha; their organ is doing & very indiscrcet thing in inviting attention to ‘he delay in this manner. Every one in Washington will be glad to see the work on the Baltimore and Potomac road commenced and pushed forward to completion. We want all the new lines possible, bu; nobody here, we are sure, hejds the construc tion ofthis road (which i: merely an addi- tional road over the same general route, fol_ lowed by the Washing‘en and Baltimoreroad) im the same importance as that of the Point of Rocks road, whieh. as affording a shor: and direct line to the West, to the Valley of Vir- ginia, to the Cumberiand Valley, and te Cen. tral Pennsylvania, will be of incalculable ad- wantage to Washington. This is the canse of the general feeling of indignation in the com- munity against the /nielligencer, which p2per is every where held responsible for the delay on the Point of Rocks road, on account of the action it insisted upon being taken by Con- gress. It is singular thatan enterprise which should bave the universal suppprt of the cit- zens of Washington and their infinence to en- —s ——— errs ey cliqae in such manner as really to throw dif- fieulties im the way, and produce delay in consummating an improvement which is of paramount interest to the city, In this connection we Tepeat what we said a few days ago, that the company is pressing its arrangements for the right of way, and as s0on as this difficult matter can be arranged, as originally designed. tne work will Progress rapidly. As regards the right ot way witain the Corporation, the absurdities and falsities of the Intelligencer have already been to some extent exposed by us. It will be remembered that the Baltimore and Ohie Company own’ ts precent station and the land on which the track and buildings are lecated, and there is | Ro limitation to the use of the streets except as to the power to use steam, which did not ex- pire until 1-90, and that the only additional authority granted by the Uouncils Was an ex. tension of the time for the use of steam for thirty years furtner, so as to induce the cons struction of the Point ot Rocks rozd to a cen- tral point for the distribution of passengers and freight for the convenience and economy of the citizens of Washington. These facts are carefully suppressed by the Intelligencer. The irieky course of the Intelligencer ia also shown in its manufacture ef words to put in the ™outh of the President of the Baltimore and black with whit veneitia, ack with white 0, The degree of real interest, Bowever, that i about 74 o'clook bast ic oe May 26—Noon. When and where did Mr. Garrett use the words used in quot. ation marks in the Intelligencer: “He does not want, as he has so often stated, to build up a rival city to Baltimore’? The old National Intelligencer, under the man- Sgement of Messrs. Gales & Se2ton, would have scorned practicing the unworthy “dodge” of coining language to pat in the mouths ofits opponents, for interested purposes. Mr. Gar. Rett has, in fact, always taken the reverse ground, and we have a copy of his last ad- dress before us in which he distinctly and broadly states, for publication in Baltimore his convictions asto the great advantages of the policy of the company to build up Wash. ington in every possible way asa matter of Common interest alike to thas city and Balti. more. Why does the Intellegencer so studie ously ignore the various evidences of the dis- position of the Baltimoreand Okio Company to Promote the business of Washington, and travel to this city. That paper knows per- fectly well, for instance, that the Company has reeently reduced the fare from all West- ern cities to Washington, to the same price as charged to Baltimore, (notwithstanding the Greater distance) and has also arranged, ia order to increase that travel, to furnish throngh tickets from Boston, New York, and Philadel. pbia to Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, and other western cities (with the privilege of visit. ing Washington) at the ‘same price that tickets are furnished to those ¢ities East and West by apy other route. Bat while the Intelligencer is so carefal to suppress facts going to show the friendly dis. Position of the. company to this city, it jumps ‘With spiteful eagerness at anything that it can istorg to the disadvantage of the company, and yesterday tt indulged this propensity in 9 ‘way to cause it to “put its foot in iz’ exten, sively. Those who know the facts in the casé ‘were surprised, if not amused, on finding the following ‘correspendence” occupying a cons spicuous position in the editorial columns ef the Intelligencer: ‘Wasuincror Crry, 1867. | Dzam Ste: In reply to your questions I ate—ist.
