E. Feinour, No. 573 H street, between 4th and ; 5 u the body of Mr. Lonis R. Hopkins, who Gied about 11 o'clock last night From the evidence of several gentlemen who were with ihe deceased yesterday up to 7 or § o’clock, he ‘was apparently in good spirits, Mr. D. D. ‘Clark was with him all the afternoon till that time, nd parted with him at the corner of 12th and F streets, when deceased proceeded directly to Sear’s drugstore, at the corner of llth and F S'reets, and purchased a dollar’s worth of jJaudanum, representing that he was getting it for a physician. He preceeded to the resi- dence of Mr. Feinour, where he swallowed @bout one-third of the drug—about an ounce 2nd a halt. As soon as it was discovered that he had taken the dose, Drs. Behrend, Bogan, ‘xter were called, and they did every- their pewer to save his life, but with. ut avail; nis death taking place about 11 O'clock.) It was also in evidence that the Jabel op the bottle in Which the drng w: was bags bryant two places, “Poison.” The . ¥ +t - Clute ss follows, ict, recite the facts and con. “After hearing the testimony of ten wit- nesses the jury have come to the conclusion that the deceased came to mis death from the ‘effect ofsaid landannm. The jury are unani- mous iti sdggesting that a law be enacted pro- hibiting the sale, in large quantities, of poison- ous drugs except preseribed, by.a physician, as it BOW appears to be the custom in this city.” The eause of this rash act cannot be ascer- tained, but he ty ty ie very sensitive mature it is thonght that an insinnation made by a.pas- Senger in a street ear,as to his character, daring the afternoon, may have worried him so much 3s to cause him to take his life. The deceased was about 24 or 25 years of age, 8 coachmaker by trade, very Tespectably connected, and bore 3 high character for honesty, sobriety, &c. He has been in bad health for seme years back. He was a member of the Metropelis Lodge ot os Fellows, in which he was held in bigh earnest THE Dgap Letreg Sare—A Queer Lot,—This Morning &t 11 o’clock the sale of articles accu- mulated im the Dead Letter Office was com- meénced at the stietion. rooms of Nagle & (o., under the supervision of Mr. Staley, of the Dead Letter Office, and there was quite a crowd m attendance. Whether viewing its many nobleand expansive arches. its towering walls, or the broken outlines of the interior or exterior, which destroy all mo- notony and lends 8 charm to the whole build- ing, the eye rests with pleasure on this grand specimen of church architecture. Oneof the the most striking features of this stately pile is the greatdoorway. Perhaps there is nothing of the kind in America to vie with it. Since the beginning the work has been prosecuted “with the greatest activity, and noone cannot help admiring the energy and perseverance of the good Fathers, surrounded, as they have ‘een wi¢h the greatest difficulties. We understand there is to be a pic-nic for the benefit ot this church on Tuesday, May “ist. All should go, as the day will be one of rare and innocent pleasure. MARRIAGES AMONG THE COLORED PEOPLE. Rey. John Kimball has made a report te Col. Rodgers, of the Freedmen’s Bureau, stating that Rev. M. V. Wright, Assistant Superin- tendent of Marriages in this District ned during the month of April 308 certifi of legal marriage; 215 of the parties were from ‘Virginia; 75 from Maryland; and 15 from this District. Some marriage ceremony had been performed in 162 cases. The rest lived together an slavery without any form of marriage. The persons to whom the certificates were granted ‘were the parents of £93 children. Seventy- seven couples were found living together ille- gally, they baving come together as man and wife since they became free. They were the parents of 57 children. Six women were found ‘with illegitimate children, the father of one being a white man. Mr. Kimball ies there is great need of more stringent laws‘to restrain these evil-doers, and it is hoped that Congress will, at the next session, make the needed Jegislation. ——— Bips Opeygp.—On Saturday bids were opened in the Mayor's office for the construc- tion of a three-foot barrel sewer, commencing at the Ninth street sewer at Pennsylvania av- enue, running east to Eighth street, in front of the south front ef square 208, thence to within sixty feet of the sumth line of E street north, and also three traps wich laterals.
