The bargest Circnlation in the District ‘W. D. WALLACH, Editer and Propricter. WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY.,.........-..--MAY 18, 1867, ®7 READING MATTER ON BVERY PAGE. BEER OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. "7 The following is the official showing of the daily cirenlation of the papers named be- | 5-20’% Jn.&Jy, low, made under the call directed by the re- cent act of Congress: EVENING STAR, 715 coples per day. Intelligencer ses 3,552 “ The returns of advertising by the same city papers for the quarter ending December 31, 1866, a8 taken from the books of the Internal oy fener. Revenue Office, are as follows: EVENING STAB Intelligencer... ———_-ee- __ L TS WARFARE TUEON THE TUINT OF ROCKS RAXLHOADE The readers of the Intelligencer cannot have failed to notice within the last year the rabid ‘vehemence Of the assaults of that paper upon the Baltimore & Obio Railroad Company, and | his every enterprise with which that Company bas had any connection, direct or indirect. In this community where the venal character of that sheet, under its present auspices, is thor- oughly appreciated, the virulent attacks of the Anteligencer upon that Company have been sapposed to have their origin in anything but disinterested motives. The Intelligencer has carried on its malignant warfare against the Company, as against Congress, without the slightest regard to the interests of Wash- ington. Thue, the Intelligencer with its lobby gang, succeeded Inst winter in delaying the work of constructing the Point of Rocks rail. Toad, & work that would have caused the dis. bursement ot large sumsof money in this city and vicinity, quickening every branch of business, and affording steady employment to thousands of our citizens. The insinuation ofthe Intelligencer in regard to the SPAR and the cauee of its advocacy of.the construction of this road are as f.lseasthey are malignant: .We bave not a penny’s interest in the road, and no interest whatever in bolstering up | what the Inielligencer terms the “gigantic mo- | nopoly.” We have warmly advocated the Point of Rocks road, believing it an enterprise | ofthe greatest imporiance to this community in opening up new markets, in drawing trade to Washington that now goes elsewhere, and in furnishing a short route to the Great West. ‘We have algo advocated giving the requisite Tight of way to theroad to en‘er the city Bo | that it may come in a direct line from Rock- ville, and not to be compelled to diverge to- wards Laurei, tapping the Washingtoa branch in'that vicinity, to the advantage of Baltimore And the disadvantage of Washington. We'! have further advocated allowing the company | to bring the road to the present depot on New Jersey Avenue, not in behalf of the interests of the company, but because we deem it for the best interests of the city that the station sbould be as near its business centre as possi- ble. The Inteliigencer, acting in the intere'tsor 4 party of speculators in surburba lots hasen- deavored to drive the depots and station to the boundaries of the city. Nothing perbaps in the category of big jobs would surpass the “big thing” to be realized by a speculation com- pelling the company to locate their buildings and business on or in the immediate vicinity ef said suburban property. We repeat, that the removal of the depot to the outskirts of the city is only im the interests of hack-drivers, freight-teamsters, and speculators in suburban jots. Every businese man in the city is inter- ested in baving the depot retained in its | precent position, for its removal to the boun- dary will compel bim to pay a dollara load | additional eartaze for freighi, will delay the delivery of freight materially. and will mulct | ¥ every passenger to the amount of two or three dollars in the way of hack-hire. In other cities it Is is considered so much of a deside- Tatum to bave freight bronght per track to the business centres, that every facility 38 promptly granted by the municipal author. ities, not only for the location of central de- Pots and stations, but also for laying switches direct to business houses, whereby freight is dumped down right in the warehouse of the owner. But the Intelligencer, true to its old fogy instincts, Proposes not only to break up the present facilities of the business men for getting freight, but to absolutely compel them to cart it from the outskirts of the city through the mud of the slashes, and ever miles ot un. | paved streets. This is crab-like progress, with & vengeance!
