Intelligencer 313.107 se 9108 +--+ __. WHY Is [T+ As the work of reconstruction goes on, two facts become more and more apparent every day. First, that the State Rights Democrats of the Border States are far mc re impracticable and uncompromising in their opposition to Republicanism than the same class of poli- ticians further South. Second, that the mili- tary leaders of the late Southern Oontederacy exhibit © muct etter spirit, and are more dis- Posed to co-r rate in good faith in tne neces- sary action to restore the Southern States to the Unien, than the blatant “home guards,” and theorizing politicians who never smelt powder. but did the « hollering” while others were fighting. An inquiry into the causes Which produce these resalts would be interesting, if we bud space for it. Suf- fice it to say that both effects may Probably be traced to the same cause. Those communities which were made to feel the strength of the military arm of the Gov- ernment by the desvlation and ruin which follow tu the track of a war vigorously pros- ecuted, realized as never before the power and majesty of the Government they were resis.- img The same with the officers who participated in the fierce conflict. Realizing the impotence of their sturdiest efforts to overthrow the na. hon, and the fatility of the courage and en- durance which were nagvailing, they were taught respect for a Government as ma-nani- mous after the fight was done as it waz pow- erfulim the fleid. The war was so neping more to them than a meré political squabble. The Iatest illustration of the tacts we have stated is furnished in Kentucky, where the State Rights Democrats carried the election of Saturday last. against tne Republicans and Conservatives combined. Their popular ma- jority is probably less than last year, but only because the vote is lighter. candidates had been ia the rebel army; nearly every one had notoriously sympathized with the rebellion.
