William Windom of Minnesota, a gentleman who, in Vongresg and elsewhere, is indefatigable in his labors for the advancement of that State, for a copy of a publication just issued by Girart Hewit': St. Paul, giving an exbibit ef the history» progress. climate. soil, agricultural and manu- facturing facilities, commercial capacities, so. cial smtus, &c., of Minnesota. The advantage, of Minnesota to the settler in healthy climats and prolific soil sre £0 clearly set forth in this publication that we ad vise those seeking homes im the great West to send for a copy to Mr Hewitt, who furnishes it gratuitously to hose Ge-iring information, and who will answer any letters We learn from this pamphlet that the popn- Intron of Minnesota is 340,000; the taxable value Of property, $57,500,000 40: the permanent schoo! fund, 81, 33.161 60: number of miles of railroad: 315, whieh will be increased to 530 during thi< year. The State debt of $250,000 18 nearly paid from the procreds of the sinking fund. Con- Tess bes granted to the State three million acres forthe support of schools, and seven anda half million acres for the construction of Tailroads. Altogether the State would appear to be im on exceedingly prosperous and healthy condition. An interesting portion of Mr. Hewitt's work 38 (bat giving the causes for the climate of Min- besota being so favorable to invalids, especial. ly consumptives. The results of modern medi- eal inquiry and the test of experience seem to establish conclusively that the ary bracing air of Minnesota, like that of New Mexico, Cali- fornia aud the Steppe of Kirghis, is more fa- vorable to invalids than the mild equable cli- mate of tbe tropics; and the remarkable fact i< bow presented of the world’s procession of besith ceekers changing their course from Ma- de.ra, Upper Egyptand the West India Isles to the bracing and elastic climate of the upper Miesissippi.
