_THE EVENING STAR. GOVERNMENT SECURITIES. + The Largest Circulation in the District W. D. WALLACH, Editor and Prepricter. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY.................APRIL 22, 1867. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. SEE OUTSIDE VOR INTERESTING TRELB- GEAPHIO AND CTHER MATTER. THE ATLANTIC MONTBLY ON MR. LINCOLN- The tendency of the age is toward realism: and a’ the presen: rate of progress the time Will soon come when the most insigaificant ‘ma‘‘er of fact” will be considered of greater importance than the most glorious dream of he lof‘ies* idealis It may weil be doubted however, whether the werld will be any et or wiser whea the iconoclasts, now so busy, Dave finished ‘heir work of destruction. It is all very well to decry bero- worship, but it has ite place im the economy of human natare, and *s uses in inMueacing ‘he formation of char. seter. Even if}! were not so, thereare higher and holier things than mere utility, in the nar- row sense in which that word is generally ap. pled. The raceof dry-as-dusts now ransack- ing the musty tomes of history with the sole view of bringing down the great men o¢ other days to conform to their own smaii tandard, are engaged im an unen viable, and jet us bope, fruitless work. The great mass of mankind will continue to believe in Homer snd Sbakspeare, and will no sooner accept be doctrine that Jesus was a mere man, with the failings and iafirmities of other men, than | bey will be convinced of thesanctity of Judas lecariot and the moral excellence of Neroand Riebard the Third. But it is not of men. good or bad, who lived so long ago, that we have to speak new. Our subject is nearer home. if ever there was aman enshrined in the popular beart, while living, that man was Abraham Lincoln; and among the common people of this country and Eurepe (always quick ia their perception of the “eroic) bis memory, now that be is dead, is and will be cherished as that of a good and true man Had be not died vy the hand of an as-assin this would have been the case, all the same- The popular conception of his character, as we gather from many sources, seems to haye been that he was the mos @nteliectual man, even in this country: but that he wag good and true, and simple; that he was honest in intention and earnest in purpose; that he was in thorough sympathy with suffering Sumanity—a man of the people; and that brenghout the great contest between treedom and slavery he was actuated not only by his own convictions of right, but was imbued with an bumble and child-like trust im Divine Providence, whose instrument he believed bimeelf tobe. Phis estimate of his character may Of may not be correct, but its being the faith of the masses, whose intuition is se!dom at fault, is in its favor. We therefore regret bas suffered at the hands of one of his adyo- cates—tbat Abraham Liacoin has been -+poi- coned’in the house of his friends.”” We refer to am article fin the Affuntic tor April. on +*Pioneering,” which, written evi- dently by @ friend of Mr. Linco and tus cause, is, in our opimion, better calcucated to divest him, inthe minds of many readers, of those engaging quali:ies wnich endeared him to the people, than all the covert and open Aitacks of the most malignant of his enemies- ‘Thos we are told that Mr. Lincoln was «for years reckless. despairing and atheistic:” that be was moody and cold: that although tem- perate, he was not a temperance man, and that & g00d woman who broke off from bim said, «1 thought that his extraordinary indifferenc others grew out of selfishness or abstraction,” Even his integrity, wnich earned him tne mame of the “the honestest man in ail the West,” does not come unalloyed from the Atlantis etucible. The writer also says that Mr. Lincoin had no “native conviction on the subject of slavery,” bat that it vas Demo- eratic corruption, not American sla ery, which determined his political positien.”” Pains are taken to prove that his first step in the cause of freedom, the signing of tne cali for a coa- vention at Bloomington, was done by his law partner, Mr. Herndon, who forged Mr. Lin- coln’s name, though the latter approved the action when he heard of it. We pass over Many other points, and come to the unkindest cut of all, which is the opimion of President Finney. (of Oberlin College.) as to ‘-the ex- Teme slowness with which Lincoin seemed ‘otake in the Providential character of the war.’ According to President Finney, Mr. Lincole did not feel tae divine presence very bear in tbe first two years of the war, as it seemed any man living soberly would have done. Now, if there is any one point oa which Mr. Linceln’s admirers are agreed, it is in this one of his child-like faith im the workings of Providence. To be sure, the finite cannot comprehend the infinite, and Mr. Lincoin’s views of the designs of Providence, ana the ‘ime and manner of accomplishing the divine | purpuse, may have been different from those of Mr. Finney.
