Upon arri- ving in New York the second time, he became ject of our @gricultural operations, the distress | acquainted with a number of counterfeiters, will be not only increased bot perpetaa’ Now the experiment is a novel one in the South, and the journals there can hardly judge of the effects tobe produced Without experience it is natural they should exagger- been constant and intense, itis not found that ‘work ts suspended or business interfered with by political meetings. In this city, we are in ihe midst of an animated contest as to the local officers to be elected in June next. White, and blacks are promiscuousily engaged, and ‘ward meeliogs are held neariy every night in the week, but we donot know of any man, ‘white or colored, who has made the “political agitation” an excuse for neglecting his work for an hour. The colored men who are to ex- ercise the elective franchise here for the firs’ time, and who might naturally be expected to tske an absorbing interest im the matter, are very sensibly not allowing their new politic i porition to interfere with their employment, but find time to work as well as to attend tue meetings. They have much to learn. and by Sgitation only will they be taught to | think, and thereby be sooner fitted for the new duties and responsibilities with which they bave been clothed. Let them bear all sides: and judge tor themselves bow they will vote There is no donbt they will get to know something of both ef the pelitical parties con- tending fer the supremacy. A portion of the colored people ot Lyuchburg are engaged in preparing & letter of invitation to some South- ern speskers, asking that they deliver public | addretses to the colored people of the chy, and advise them what course to pursue in the Present condition of affairs, and the Ricbmond Dispoich lays aside its repugnance to the coloredpeople to ask: “If the newly-made voters bear bone but radical barangues, aud are left to infer, as they will be ready enough to do, thattbese are uvanswerable, how can they be expected to vote with the whites" qq __ ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Two years ago to-day, the rejoicings through- out the country at the suppression of the grear rebellion, were suddenly checked and tarned into mourning by the sad intelligence of the death of the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. who perisbed by the hand Of ap assassin. Noone who was in Washing. ton at the time will ever forget the horror which thrilled this community on the night of April I4th, 1505, as the terrible news spread trom house to house: nor the Spontaneous manifestations of grief at the decease of the martyred patriot on the nextday, when, in a few hours after the dismal tidings of death were circulated, from every building—the bovel as well as the mansion—was displayed some symbol of mourning. Some of these man- piestations wereof the most touching character In many cases, where the pinchings of poverty orbade ostentation, a little scrap of faded IBourning on the door or window spoke elo- quently of the heartfelt grief of the poor and humble at the loss of their best friend. Every recurrence of this sad anniversary should be remembered by the nation, and its lessons im. pressed upon our hear's, to renew in us these Hires of patriotism which burned so brightly m the breast of the great and good man so oully murdered because of bis devotion to his country. The Governor of Illinois has ap- pointed this anniversary as a day of fasting nd prayer; but it will doubtless be remem- bered in thousands of homes throughont the land where no official action has been taken to commemorate it.
