THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation im ‘the District W. D. WALLACH, Eéditer and Proprietor. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY............... APRIL 6, 1667, S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. THE RETURN OF REASO: No better evidence of the recent hopefal change in the political attitude of the people ofthe South, resulting from the firmness of Congress in dealing with the question of re. construction. has been brought to our notice thaw the guarded comments of the press in that evction om the Connecticut election. There is no “jubilation,” ard they do not seem to see the coming “reaction” promised by some of tneif conservative contem- poraries in the North, bu: have evidently come to the wise conclusien that their future tate rests with themselves alone, aod does not depend on the gain or loss of one or two Democratic Representatives in Congress. The Richmond papers are unusn- aly reticenton the subject. The Whig saysit is “because they have forgotten how to crow over election results.” But there is something More in it than this. They at last begin to re- alize that seli-interest is the ruling motive with their Northern sympathizers, and have determined no longer te sacrifice the good of their section for the doubtful prospective ad- vantages of an alliance with the anti-Repub- | jican party of the North. The ease is aptly stated by the Charlottesville ( Virginia) Chron- acl, which says: « Neither the Democratic | party. nor President Johnson, nor the Supreme Court is going to be of any service to the Seath.” It sensibly advises the people in that section not, as usual, to fly off the helye | about the Connécticut election, nor to fal back sgain in hope upon the Democratic party, “The Northern Democracy Aare use Sor ut im peace; they Aare none in war. Their opject ts to make ted capital; and the South is merely & ball that is struck by the bats of the contending rties But the very momeat Ben Wood & Co show their heads plainly and ron up boldly the Democratic flag, and call on the South to stand by them as a unit, that very Moment will ‘he North be a unit against the South and all the Democratic champions. Lt is hatred and fear of the Dem- ecratic party (whose strength was in the South) that has made the Northern people so snarp and so extreme with the South. itis this ha- tred nd fear which bas kept the sore runaing sance the war. There will be no peace Sor the South until the Democratic party marches off th Seid of battle. DISVOSAL OF PUBLIC LAND. The Commissioner of the General Land Office bas received returns showing an aggre- gate disposal of 18, acres of the public lands during the month ot March. at the following local offices: Tallahassee. Florida, 4,955 acres, under the homestead act of June » St, 1865, Which confines the entries to 8) acres each: East Saginaw, Michigan. 6,192 acres: Ironton, Miseourt, 1,755 acres: louia. Michigan, 1,681 acres. At the last three named offices nearly #il the land disposed of was taken for actual settlement and cnitivation. Since the opening of the office at Tallabassee, Florida, thirteen hundred and eighty-five farms have been added to the productive force of the State. — THE WHITE HOUSE, ‘The usual crowd of visitors were in atten- dance to-day, and a large number had inter- views with the President, among whom were severai Senators and Kepresentatives. Attor- ney General Stanberry and Postmaster Gen- eral Randail had an interview with the Pres- Geant this afternnon. LAND PATENTS.
