The motion was adopted, and the Chair appointed Messrs. Bal- lantyne, Pratt, Steinmetz, Anderson and Biiss as such committee. The Chair stated that the convention was callea under the auspices of the Young Men's Christian Associa and would be composed of representatives from ali tre Evangelical Churebes. After prayer by Dr. Gillette, the committee to nominate permanent officers reported the aamed gentlemen, and they were ident. Rey. Dr. A. D. Gillette; Vice Presidents, Rev. Mr. Fairchief, Rev. Byron Sunderiand, B. Peyton Brown, Major Gen. O. O. Howard; Secretary, J. P. Tustin Dr. Gillette, on taking the chair, returned his thanks for the honor conferred upon him, and said itcaused him great pleasure to pre- side over a Christian convention Mr. Ballantyne. chairman of the business committee, then reported rules for the govern- ment of the convention which were adopted, and are as follows: ist. That we hold t vo 8 sions daily; the first from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m.,and the second at New York avenue church trom 7% to 9% pm : 2d. That from fifteen to thirty minutes be spent in devotional exercises at the opening of each session 3d. That speakers be limited to five minutes, except the person introducing debate, who shall be allowed fifteen minutes, and that no one shall be allowed to speak twice on the same topic until all have an opporiunity to speak who shall so desire. 4th. That uo subject shall be discussed un- less reported by the committee on business. Sth. In order that the convention may be able to discuss each of the subjects presented, ‘we would recommend that debate o2 each topic close within one bour. He aiso submitted the following questions to be discussed, the debate to be opened by the gentleman whose name followed. 1. The Importance of Lay Effort. How can it most effectually be brought to bear in the cause of Christ !—Dr. Chester. 2. How can we best reach and influence those who habitually neglect Public Wor- ship '|—Dr. Grey. ow can the Unity of Christ’s Follow- be better manifested to tne World !—Dr. Sunderiand. 4. Mr. Ballantyne stated the object of the Con- vention to be for the purpose of spreading the gospel and create a religious feeling in those who gave no attention to religion. Kev. J. M. Turner, of New York, gavea bistory of the good work performed by their society in New York city. The first subject for debate was taken up. and remarks made by Rev. wr. Chester, Rev. 3.G. Butler, Messrs. S. L. Loemis, R. P. An- derson. and others, which continued till about one o'clock, when the second subject was taken up and discussed until adjourn ment. Seen Ormrvat Court, Judge Wylie_—This morn- tng, in the case of Levin Coleman, indicted for larceny, nolle pros. was entered. Alexander Adams, indicted for an assault and battery with intent to kill his wife, was found guilty of an assault and battery only, and sentenced to three months in jail. George Smackum was convicted of an as- emult and battery on bis wife, and sentemced to three months in jail. Dennis Bryson, indicted for the larceny of a quantity of bed-clothes trom Ellen Kelly, was — not guilty. 1. L. Johnson for defense.
