THE REGISTRATION. “The small number of white voters registered n the rirst Ward under the recent act of Con- gress shows that there is a disinclination on the part of many old citizens to register their names. We regret to see this spirit manifested, and are satisfied that, if persisted im to any extent, itcam only serve to put the people of the city in a wrong attitude, as being disposed to resent the action of Congress, or to receive it im a sullen mood. Every consideration of propriety, and of interest in our city’ relfare, requires tmat we should net, even by implica. tion, pat ourselves in antagenism to the will ef Congress, deliberately expressed, in regard to District matters; over which that body has supreme control. [tis the duty of every good citizen to cause his name to appear on the registry list, and thus show that he accepts the situation im good faith. We are glad to see tha; many of the oldest and most respected citizens of the First Ward have set a good example in this respect by promptly appearing before the judges of election and causing their names to ba recorded. ARREST OF A COUNTERFEITER. 4 NUMBER OF PLATES CAPTURED. The secret-service officers of the Treasury Department have been kept busy for some time past in searching for counterfeiters and plates, and a number of them have been captured but the most important arrest was made in Ciweinnati, on Friday last, by Col. C. W. Wooa, chief of the secret service. The plates were also captured, and are said to be equal in execution to the genuine ones in the Depart. | ment. Mr. Wood, with great difficulty, suc- ceeded in getting upon the track of a man mamed Charles Ulrich. and made the arrest as | above stated, on Friday last, at the same time seeuring the plates. Ulrich He is said te be one of the best engravers in the country. When arrested he acknowledged that it was his intention to flood the country With the counterfeits, but said h+ had not got fairly started. The plates captured were as follows: $/00 plate on the First National Bank of Beston, all complete; $500 plate, the back complete. but the front unfinished; $5 place upfinisbed. Some impressions were made at the Treasury yesterday from these plates, and it was almost impossible to distinguish them from the gen- ume. The plates are a most excellent piece of workmanship, and had Ulrich got to work, vis very probable that he would have had thousands of dollars circulated without being detected. Mr. Wood deserves great credit for his zeal in working up this case and bringing the counterfeiter to justice. Ulrich acknowl- edged that it bad cost him much time and money to keep out of the way of Col. Wood | and bis officers. He was brought to this eity on Monday, and yesterday sent wo New York in charge of an officer. where he will be in- dicted first.
