Mr. A. D. Moore ( white) moved the appoint- meat of a committee to invite Mr. Maddox, ot Brooklyn, and Gen. Van Wyck to address the association; which was agreed to. Mr. Arthur Panne}! (colored) ted a letter signed by one Geo. M. Arnold, purport- ing to be from the Freedmen’s Bureau, which the Chair ruled ont of order. George H. Newman (colored) remarked that letter referred to remarks made by him, and asked that it be read; and there being no objection. the letter was read. ‘The letter is addressed to J. F. N. Wilkinson and signed George M. Arnold, who. afterrefer- Ting to the remarks made by Newman in ref- erence to agents persuading freed people to go to Texas, denies tbat it is a plotoris being done to have an eflecton the coming election. He says it is true that there are colored men who bave been identified with the interests of tneir race who are now engaged in this movement. ihe goes on to defend General Howard and h officers, and says that no man from the S South, including Maryland, has been turnished with help unless properly vouched for, and ‘hat the agents of the bureau are not using any means to defeat the party, but just the reverse. He calls attention to the fact that there is now a large floating population in the District, few { whom obiain situations here, and in view of the destitunon which is sure te follow he considers it a duty to use all nonorable means to get siteations for such as desire to go in the North. East, West or South, with such per- sons as can be youched for as the proper per- sons. Mr. Coster moved that the letter be returned Mr. George H. Newman (colored) remarked that this Mr. Arnold was a colored man who was a clerk to Captain Wall, the latter being employed by the Frredmen’s Buarean, and he was im the plot He (Arnold) thought the action of the meeting would interfere with him in_prosecuting this trafftc. Mr. H. O. Jobnson reiterated the statements of the last speaker in relation to Arnold being im the business Rev. W. J. John Kimball, Superintendent of Colored Schovls in the Department of Washington, has made his report te General Howard, Commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau, showing the con- dition of the schools during the month of Feb- ruary. The whole number of day and night schools is 90, under 142 teachers—129 white and 33 colored; with 4 puptis. In Alexandria and Fairfax couuty. Va, there are 26 schools, with 1,756 pupils, under 29 white and 5 colorea teachers. Six schools, with 29) pupils are re- ported from Maryland. There are aiso in this district. not regularly reported, 7 schools, ‘with 460 pupils. Making the whole number of schoolsin the tment 129, with 7,325 pupils, under 191 teachers. The police worked harmoniously with the firemen, and after awaking the inmates. (one of whom was f:st asleep, with his head on a burning pillow.) turned their attention to saving the stock and furniture, and succeeded in getting out the safe, contaizing the books. Mr. Brewer had ip Dis stabl: three fine horses, a mule and cow, which wer burned to acrisp, and a number of cutting machines, which were destroyed with the harnest . but his wagons near by were saved, some of them in a damaged condition. The flames spread rapidly to the rear of the brick bouse, butning alarge quantity ef baied hay and straw in ics way, and forced the policeand others to leave the butiding: but through the efforts of the firemen the progress of the flames were chec ied before the building was entirely destroyed. The dwelling and bakery of Mr. S. Paton, udjoining, was slightly ihjared, his loss being probably about $150. The officer failed to ring in an alarm from box 32 by reason of a broken wire, and & meseage as to the locality of the tive was telegraphed from the station to Police Head- quarters, when the alarm was struck, bringing out the entire department. ——2— Horatio Borster Back AGAIN, AND AT HIS OLp Tricks.—Last night, Horatio Bolster, the prize fighter, made his ap) ‘ance in D street. near 13th street, at the se kept by Molly Keyes. He was accompanied by Melvin Kurtz aud Geo. Thatcher, and another who escaped. After indulging in a bottle of wine, they started to leave. They were followed te the door by the landlady, who reminded Bolster that he bad not paid for the wine. This offenaed him, and he turned upon the woman and began to beat her: two other women ran to the door in alarm, and Bolster knocked one senseless, and gave the other a severe blow. The landiady was in the act of sounding a call whistle for the police, and Bolster threatened to shoot her. He tried to kick her watch from her waist, and she, in saving that, lost her gold bracelets. Thatcher joined in the woman beating, and as. sauited Sally Brown. A young man named Ster- ling went to assist the woman,and Bolster and bis companions turned upon himand beat him unmercifally. Sergeant Jobnson and officers Alder and Ray arrived in time to arrest Thatcher and Kurtz as they were leaving the door. Bolster ran back and got on a bed, and defied the officers. The Sergeant went to take bim down, and Bolster showed fight: but the Sergeant applied his «right flipper” to the prize fighter’s “mug,” and Bolster at once “threw up the sponge.” and was taken down trom the bed.
