Last evening, the regular weekly meeting of the Kepublican Association was held at the Union League Rooms. The President and ‘Vice Presidents being absent, as also the re- cording secretary, Mr. F. A. Boswell was called tothe chair, and Mr.C. M. Barton, finan- cial secretary, called on to actas recording sec- retary M.McNalley and J. M. Donnell wereelected Inembers . A pause, broken by a voice, adjourn sine die.” Mr. Barton called up his resolution con- fining speeches to ten minutes, Col. Cartis suggested that an amendment be mmade to limit the speecher question ‘The amendment was accepted, and the con- sideration of the resolution was postponed. Mr. Watson called up his resolution in rela- tion to abelishing the charter. [A Voice.—It ain't bere | He proceeded to state that the Republicans desired the political control of the District, and that it could not be so even ‘With the colored yote. Objection had been made on the ground that it would debar the colored people from the privilege of voting. ‘This it did not propose to do; but it looked to Yeaving some of the officers to be elected. It had been thought best to propose three com- missioners to be elected by Congress and two to be elected by the people, so that, should the Joyal voters fai) to elect their cand.dates, there ‘will be a loyal majority in the beard. In answer to & question, Mr Watson said that there was a bill similar to the one pre- posed now under censideration in Congress, apd he proposed that a committee wait on Congress and urge its passage. The resolution was laid oyer for one week. Dir. H. ©. Johnson (colored) presented an address, prepared in compliance with a reso- Jotion of the Union League of America, No. 15, Seventh Ward, signed hy 3 himself, A. Bowen, and C. Marshall, setting forth that numbers of colored mem are Out of employment, and ask- ing the association te aid them in getting em- ployment, as it is the only mode of concen- rating them Mr. Johnson said that it was not to be dis- ‘fuised but that there were colored men in office who did nothing towards the elevation oft their race, but did all they could to sink them. Some of these men were employed in the Capitol, and the association might do something there, but could not expect much am the Departments where Copperheads haye ibe rule. Mr. Watson said he knew colored men inthe Departments, as well as in the Capitol, who ‘were the enemies of the Republican party, and one of his reasons for urging the passage of the charter resolutions was to get the power from the hands of the copperheads. There were white and black men under the shadow of the statue of liberty, who are the enemies of the race. Col. Curtis said that in Washington he had observed that the office holders were syco- phants, and this remark was to be applied to the colored office holders who showed, from what be bad seen, that they were like their ‘white neighbors, and this was an argument tbat they were buman Mr. Johnson said that many of the men al- luded to were those who never gave of their means to churches or other good objects, but were to be seen hanging round grog shops. ‘They were the men who can be bought for a drink of whiskey. Mr. Watson suggested that the names of these copperhead blacks be made known. He knew & white man in the capitol, who was a copperhead naturally and his name was Tur- ner. Mr. Baker knew several. The Chair suggested that to make their names known was to strengthen their enemies, and thatthe most judicious way to accomplish Anything was to inform the committee before Congress of the names and positions of these people. The paper was referred to the committee be- fore Congress. Mr. Joseph Williams, of Va., said that the ides of asking Congress te do anything w: preposterous. What has Congress done! After they nad sat fortwo vears after the close of the war, there is a worse state of things than there was in 1862. Oongress Bas done nothing except te raise salaries, including their own, Sand pass bounty laws to keep themselves in power, but nothing for the Union men of South, whoare ing shut up in prison, t arms taken &c. What dia they They promised last summer that sleep shoal not come to their eye! until Andrew John- Son wasimpeached, and a friend put in his piace. They have not done it yet, and the civil Tights bill and the freedmen’s burean bill un- der the Administration amount to nothing. He appoints offieers of the Bureau to carry outbis own views. How are tne people or the South to be relieved! Is God going to work a miracle! He hoped He would, and smite the rebels and weak-xneed Republicans as He did Pharoah. Old man Stevens, who had fought them like a Trojan, even now was compelled to pause because the weak-kneed Republicans failed todo their duty. Why don’t the co: mittee go to work and do what they wer; elected to do? Talk about removing a oe rebels from office! Why, the very man spoken of by = Watson is retained in office by a rad- ical. apd Loom bad shown an example in ta- xing ores her friends which Congress should follow. ina few short months Maryland had done this, but Congress in two years bas not even reconstrueted the Disirict. A Voice.—Or the Capitol. George Newman (colored) said that he was glad that bis Unele Moses, at the other end of the avenue, had been mentioned. He called the attention of the association to the case ot Jerry Gordon, a colored man, who had both legs shot off at Bull Run second, who had been badly treated by the officer in charge at Freedman's Village. (Capt. Lawrence.) He bad been locked up on bread and water, his rations and his papers taken away from him, <&c. This Capt. Lawrence, in his opinion, was @ goat in sheep's clothing. He thought taat Gen. Howard should know of this case; that fome one bad better tell him that one of his bureau drawers is cracked. Mr. C. H. Bliss understood that Lawrence ‘was about to be dismissed, and was satisfied tf the proper course was taken that he would be in twenty-four hours. Mr. Bliss and Mr. Newman were appointed to wait op Genera! Howard in relation to the matter.
