R. McLean, in the chair, and James H. Reed secretary. The erecentiais of Thomas Mc Willtams, R Rothwell, Jonn W. Murphy, Wm. G. Robin- son, nnd Alexander Pacterson, as delegates from the Journeymen Stone Cutters’ Associa- tion, were received and the gentlemen admit- ted Lo seats. Mr McWilliams stated the association had also ratified the new constitution adopted py the assembiy The resignation of Mr. Wm. B. Berger as corresponding secretary was received and ac- cepted. and Mr. James P. McKean elected to fil the vacancy. Ou metion of Mr. Harrison, the chairman of the old exe ve committee (Mr. A. T. Cavis) rized to call A meeting of the new executive committee on Saturday, the 26th anst.. for the purpose of organization Mr. Whaley siated the Columbia Typo- grapbieal Society, at their last meeting, decided to request the Assembly to reduce the amount of taxation under the new constitution from five to three cents for each member. Mr. Cook moved to amend the constitution So as to reduce the taxation from five to three cents on each member; Iaid over under the rules Mr. Mc Williams was appointed a member of the Executive Committee from the Stonecutters’ Association The Obair, in answer to an inquiry, stated when the Convention was first organized thirty-three trade associations were repre- sented. To-night not more than six were rep- resented Mr. McWilliams said if there was not more ife and energy shown by the Assembly, tha onecutters’s Association would withdraw T delegates and unite with other organiza- s of stonecutters throughout the country for the purpose of accemplishing the eighi- bour Iaw Mr. Whaley said he thought there was a ‘Wwantof interest. The ceuntenances of mem- bers looked dull, and be had no doubt people outside thought there was a prayer meeting being held. He hoped the visiting committee wonld see each trade organization in the Dis- trict, and urge them to send delegates. ‘Throughout the country the eight-hour move- ment was rapidly gaining ground Mr. McLean eaid it was useless totalk about failures. It was not the fault of the conven- th but of the different trade organizations. it was the duty of all the members of the as- sembly to urge them tosend delegates, and thus have @ proper organization. It would avail but @ to petition Congress, until the ‘Wworkimemen of the District were properly or- ganized, and would put some life in the move- ment. Horace Greeley was announced as the Hirst speaker, and delivered a briet address, Sdvocating, in bis usual earnest manner, the necessity of protecting our home industry: and waa followed by Hon. Henry L. Davis, of Mass., im favor of the same princip tes. Commussioner Welis having been called on, professed himeelf s friend of protection, and Tegretted there should be any misconception of bus position. Representative Kelley, of Pa, in the course of bis remarks, said if this country had the Tleld to itself for two years it would be the wfacturing and exportung country Representative Hale, of N. ¥., spoke of the necessity of protection. But few, he said, could have an idea of what is specionsiy called free trade—not tree trade to us, but te those ‘who ask it, to control ns and make us their slaves. Executiveand Judicial appropria- tion bill, amended the last clause so as to Teduce the increased compensation of the Metropolitan Pelice force from 50 per cent. to 20 percent. This increase was accorded last year, And was made to date back to July 1, iow. Yesterday, the committee made it opera. tive only from Nov. 1, 1666. Before the in- <Tease was allowed the salary of a patrolman ‘Was only $60 per month. The increase gave them $9. The reduction will of course create jnuch dissatisiaction.
