THE EVENING STAR. | COURTSHIP Is GREENLAND.—There is some- (hing exceedingly Mr iauetoly in Ube accounts | \* hieb are given of the castom of courtship in | Greenland. Generally, wemen enter apon the | blessed estate with more willingness and less solicitute tham the men. The women of Green- lend are an exception to this rule. A Green- | lander, having fixed his affeetions apon some female, acquaints his parents with the state of bie heart. They apply to the parents of the girl, and if the parues thas far are agreed, the next proceeding 1s to appoint two female nego- Gators, whose duty it is to broach the subject to the younglady. The lady embassadors do not shock herby any sudden orabrupt -vowai of the awtul subject of their mission. Instead of this they launch outin praises of the gen- Ueman who seeks her hand. They speak of the eplendor of bouse, the sumptuousness of bis courage in catching seals, and other like accomplishments. The lady, pretend- ing to be affronted eve! t these remote hints, runs sway, tearing the ringlets of her bair as she retires, while the embassa- dors having got the consent of her parents, pursue her, drag her from her concealment, take ber by force to the house of her destined husband, and there leave her. Compelled tore- main there, she sits for days wih \aiahaveled bair, silentand dejected, refasing every kind of sustenance, till at Jast, if Kind entreaties do Bot prevail, she is compelled by force, and even blows, to submit to the detested union. In some cases Greenland women faintat the proposal of marriage—in others they fly to the mountains. and only return when compelled to by cold and hunger. If one cutsoff ber harr, it is a sign that she intends to resist to death. All this seems so unnatural to us that we seek for a reason for such an apparent violation of the first principle of human na- The Greenland wife is the slave of her sband, doomed to a Iife of toil, drudgery and privation; and, if he die, sbe and her children bave no senrce against starvation. The mar- riage state is miserable condition, while widowhood is a still more appaling fate. BARPARISM IN CALIFORNIA — Torturtng a Chinaman.— We hear remarks about the “ bar- barism™ of other lands, but is there any part of heathendom where a greater outrage than this conld be committed? We learn from Deputy Sheriff Saie some particulars ia reiation to the torturing and punishment of a Chinaman at McCarty’s ranch, now owned by a Portuguese named Joseph L. Lopez. A Chinaman came to Sale on Thursday and in- formed bim thatanother Chinaman was being me t cruelly tortured at the ranch, on tae rge of stealing money. Sale immediately eded to the locality, but before his arri- Chinaman had been sent to Nevada. From what Sale could learn, some $400 had been stolen from Lopez, which he haa con- cealed in a sack of beans, aud kept it in a room where the Chinaman—wnho was employed asa cook at the house—had free access. It appears to have been a store-room, to which teamsters and other white men living in the vicinity had aceess. The money was missed on Wednes- Gay, and suspicion was at once directed to the Chinese cook. He was held in custody over bight, hung by the neck until life was nearly extinct, and otherwise maltreated and tnreat- ened, to make him disclose what had become of the money. He, however, continued to protest his innocence, and on Thursday he was sent to Nevada by bis tormenters and delivered to the | custody of the officers. No formal charge was lodged against him, but by the advice of the district attorney he was detained for further information. Sale came to Nevada yesterday morning, and on his statement of the circum- stances the Chinaman was discharged. The Celestial is bigbly indignant at his treatment, d expresses a determination to commence a snit against Lopez for damages.— San Francisco Bulletin. A SHORT HONBYMOON.—A few weeks since, a young German barber of Indianapolis led to the hymeneal altar a handsome and totellizent girl to whom be had been paying his addresses. The course of true love was not disturbed by as much asa ripple until Monday iast, when the knight of the razor, on returning home, dis. covered that Bis canary bird had flown, leaving nothing but the empty nest. The disconsolate barber returned to his shop and put an end to s existence, by swallowing haif a pint of hair dye. &7 The proprietor of a public house in Wisconsin bad bis valise stolen while ona visit to the southern part of theState. On re- turning home, be found the thief and the stolen property housed in bis own hotel. The aston. isbment of the thief at finding himseif the guest of bis victim may be imagined. S7 A few nights since a Boston physician was summoned to the door et a quarter past le eleven o'clock by the violent ringing o! the | bell. In Penobscot county alone there were 109 killed, an the single town of Lincoin 45. The satavan show that there were only tour wolves killed in the entire State during the year.
