This tariff, pre. pa by Mr. Wells, 1s understood to be a revenue tarif!, giving protection to the indus- try of the country by admitting, as far as pos. sible, r w materials free or with a light duty, Snd taxing more beayily the manufactared | fabric ‘THE INDENTUBE OF COLORED CHILDREN The Freedmen’s Bureau has received a com- munication from Prince Frederick, Calver; county, Meryland, stating that « colored man named Jonn Lox bas been indicted by the grand jury for taat county for harboring his who bad been bound, but were re leased to him by Judge Bond, of Baltimore. ‘The facts reported in the case are that John } ‘was summoned before the orphaus’ court early in 1965, te apprentie bich he refused to do. he being abie to take care of them himself. With this the | <ourt was satisfied. but the wife of John was forme the slave ot Dr. James Duke, and a e afterwards Dake had Jobn and his “gain summoned before the court. The father -tll refused to have his children bound: bul potwithetanding this the eourt. it is alleged, apprenticed them to Dr. Duke, against the con- sentaof the father Lox appeled to the Crimi. mal Court, in Baltimore, and the children were before Judge bond on a writ of habeas corpus, Who ordered that they be delivered to the father. Duke then weut before the grand jury and baa him indicted for enticing bis chudren from their master. He was held to bail for his Appearance at the next term of the court. A communication has also been received frem thé superimiendent at Annapolis, Md.. statin, tbat several cases similar to the above Bave occurred in thar vicinity. A number ot cases were before Judge Boud, in Baltimore, a few days ogo, who returned the children to their parents; but the order of the court was obeyed in one case only, and attachments have | been issued against the others. In one case, Judge Magruder decided that the writ of his court took precedence of the proceedings in the criminal court. The superintendent says:—«The present State of the law is very perplexing. Until it #ball be decided whether replevin will hold ip these cases no children are safe unless they are removed from the county. Wilson, Commissioner of the General Land Office, is nearly completed, and will be published as soon as the maps are finished. The report is very full, and will contain twenty-three maps of the different States and Territories, showing | the various mineral resources of the country. Congress bas under consideration the Propriety of printing the report in both German and French, in order that it may be distributed in Europe next year. Workmen are now engaged in engraving the maps, and it is thought the report wilt be published in about two weeks. TO BE DISMISSED. On Wednesday Iast, in the House ot Repre- sentatives, ou motion of Mr. Farnsworth, of lilinois, the clause in the Civil and Dipiomatic appropriation bill, appropriating the amount asked tor by (be Secretary of the Treasury and Postmaster General for the pay of additional and temporary clerks, was stricken out. By this action the force in the Treasury Depart- ment will be reduced about fifty, (a number of whom are ladies,) and in the Post Office De- partment about twenty-five. Se A AEE re ee RETURNED, Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, returned to the city last evening, and was at his office this morning, where he was visited by a large number of persons. THE WHITE HOUSE. A few persons had an audience with the President this morning. Cabinet meeting was held at twelve o'clock, and the session con- tunued for some time: all the members present.
