THE THREATENED IMPBACHMENT. The crazy idea of attempting the impeach- Ment of the President, if ever seriously con- templated by the extremists, has been aban- doned by all but Wendell Phillips and Gen. Ben F. Butler. Itis denied now on bebalf of Hon. Jobn A. Bingham, of Ohio, that he ever made use of the threat to move the impeach- ment of the President at the approaching ses- Sion of Congress, except provisionally in case the President should officially assert what it was alleged he bad unofficially proclaimed, that Congress was an illegal body unlawfully assuming the functions of legislation. The fact is that even the bitterest of the extreme men find the project of attempted impeachment of the President on purely partizan grounds so untenabie that they are glad to abandon it, or toexpiain away their advocacy of it into the Merest generalities. The New York papers we see are cautioning in New York city, telling them that the labor market there is overstocked, business dull, and maultitudes of workmes are discharged, while the rate of wages is falling. We feel ita duty to give the same warning to persons coming to Washington in quest of employment. Ia our long experience in the newspaper business we have never berore known so many persons out of employment in this city, A lsrge portion of the floating Population brought here by the war still linger long after the demand for their labor has ceased, and jostie each other for a livelihood in all the trades, and in @ fierce contest for the smallest governmental office. Descending the gocial scale, we bave some thirty thousand col- oTed people, contrabands, &c., Seeking employment here, of whom it is safe to eay that twenty thousand will not average a day's work in a week during the coming win. ter. The poor-house is already overfiowing and unable to afford a shelter for theswarms of vagrants and houseless ones afloat upon our streets, and Heaven only knows what will become of the thousands of the unemployed here when the severity of winter comes upon us.
