Harkness, the latter sketching the early days of Methodism in this city and the history of the McKendree Chapel. In 1842 Ryland Chapel was sratted. in 18H, Rev. F.S_ Evans called a meeting to reorganize a Missionary society at the engine-house corner of Sth and K strets, but fatled to get in, and those aseembled adjourned to the trout of a carpenter shop on Sth street, above K, when Mr. Evans preached. This was the starting pont tor McKendree, and it was determined to hold a Sunday school in this carpenter shop. Dlearures were at once taken to procure a lot. and they were successtul in obtaining the pres- ent site, on which tbe charch was erected, and in 1845 a preacher was asked for. On the 2uth of April, of thst year, the church was dedica- ted, and the following Wednesday. night the society was formed of sixty-one members. The cbarge aguinst Monk is the same as on many otber oceasions, petty larceny, and Justice Morsell sent hira to jail for court. Wright, 4 colored washerwoman, residing on the corner of F and 3d streets, (Island,) on the charge of having murdered her child, on which it will be recollected an inquest was held on Satur- day, it having been found ina privy box. She denied that she had been the mother of a child, but other persons im the neighborhood testified that sbe had been enciente, and on an exam- ination by a midwife it was ascertained that she had recently given birth toa child.
