Mexican advices via New Orleans state that Maximilisn offered to abdicate im favor of young Iturbide. but Bazaine objected, and Maximilian declines to abdicate in favor of any oneeise. Dispatches received in this city are to the effect that Castelman intends organ- izing & provisional government, composed of Lares, ope of the Imperial Ministers, and Te- jsds, Juarez’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kemor ays that this combination is favorably received by the United States, but considering the recent course of our Gevernment, this 1s: to say the least, rather improbable; as are the statements telegraphed from New Orleans that Maximilian was compelled, by order of Mar- shal Bazaine, to abandon his design ot evacu- ting Mexico, that the commander at Vera Cruz bas beem positively torbidden by the French Marshal to permit him to depart on board the Austrian frigate Dandolo, and that, in conse- quence of these peremptory proceedings, the Emperor bas returned to the Mexican capitals although these reports may bave a basis of truth That Maximilian returned under a threat of arrest is not to be credited. If there were any good reasons why the Re- Public should not be established, and why imperialism sbouid be continued. then young Iturbide bas the best right tothe throne. But such reasons do not exist, and if they did, the placing of a three years old child nominally a the head of affairs in Mexico would be the surest means of increasing the distractions of that wunbappy country. Marshal Bazaine, in his movemengs, is probably only consulting the interests ged honor of France, which would be compromised by the precipitate flight of Maxintilian, without bis formally abdicating, ‘which the Emperor willno doubt do, leaving @ temporary regency to wind up affairs. It is stated further that news from the Mex- jean capital, via Havana, confirms the report of the abdication of Maximilian, and that the Austrian frigate was ready to sail at a mo- ment’s notice. SPIBIT OF THE CITY The Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune says: The National Intelligencer hitherto most bitterly opposed to the colored Face, astonished its readers on Friday morning by following in the wake of the Chicago Times: Its editorial says that «there never can be «table peace in this country until the colored race are made entirely equal before the law in regard to civil rights. 1t 1s desirabie that after Jong 4nd injurious agitation the South should spontaneously do this. A PittsruRG CLERGYMAN IN TeoreLE.— Rev. Dr. James Pres! of Pittsburgh, Pa, who was receatly sus; ed trom his reiauioas with the United Presbyterian Church oa the cbarge of cruelty to bis family, indecent and blasphemous language, and maintaining im- proper relatiens with temales, delivered a tare- well address yesterday to his congregation, in whicb, while disclaiming apy complaint against the action of the Presbytery. who acted upon positive testimony of three wit nesses, while the testimony in his bebalt of his sged father, kind brother and affec- uonate children was only negative, and necessarily of no avail; he defied to prove he was guilty of indecent and vulgar Janguage, which he ab- horred above ail things, and thanked God he bad not been found guilty of adultery. The sentence of suspension did not affect his reia- tions asa pastor ef the church, as any disso- lution must be at the request of his congrega- tion. He asked them not act hastily, bat thoughtfully and prayertuily. He prayed to God that he might be allowed to remain here and hve down the calumny and roach heaped upon bim. This was the last time he would appear in the pulpit till his suspension was removed. The congregation were visibly affected, the doctor having still friends and adherents among them. Mrs. Presley has pe. Utioned for a divorce. A NEw TEXxTILE.—The last discovery which comes to us from Nevadais agricultural rather than mimeral, but very important. It is of a new textile, such as was eagerly sought when the rebellion broke ont, but unsuccessfully. The plant now discovered has its home in the Humbelat Valley, where it grows in large quantities, and can, of course, be made to grow more thriftily by cultivation, while, if it has the vslues which are ascribed to it. it will soon be removed to other fields and propagated among regular crops. The plant is said by the discoverers to be sa- perior to any textile now in use. Though styled hemp. itis 80 called on account of its closer similarity to that than to any other growth. It bas a stronger and finer fibre than the proper hemp, and a much longerstaple. In Proportion to the wood, too, the fibre is much More abundant. It can be more easily separa. ted than flaxorhemp. and can be stripped clean from tbe stalk without preparation Nevada lies between 37 degrees and 42 de. grees North. This corresponds with the iati- tade of Northern California, ot san Francisco, Salt Lake City. Indianapolis, Columbus and Philadelphia. The Humboldt River, along which the new hemp grows, runs from the mountains of that name westward, through a mountainous country. If, therefore, exper- iment proves what is now ciaimed fer this textile, 1t can bP paiement in its cultivation from its original habitation to our own doors, and willenbance the vaime of the hemp har- vest im those States where it is now an impor- tant feature.—Philadelphia Gazette. pesacetase_ tease Stanan RESIGNED and Lerr RicHMOND.— The Rev.
