AMUSEMENTS, &c., TO-NIGHT, NATIONAL THEATER.—The Richings Eng- lish Opera Troupe had the largest audience of the searon Inst evening. To-night they will preeent for the first time in this city Eichberg’s celebrated comic opera ‘‘The Doctor of Alean- born Another crowded house may be ex- pected. Ss aires ORGAN Concent at FeunpRy Cavrcu.— Last night. an organ concert was given at the Foundry Methodist somes Church, coraer of 18th and G streets, for the purpose of raising funds to pay for the new organ of the eburch. The musical attractions, combined with the Spporiaaiy of seeing the interior of this fine new cburch, drew a large and distinguished audience. The church is to be dedicated on Sunday Dext, sndts Row furnished with the exception of the pew cushions. The style of decoration is sufficiently ornate to gratify the eye, but is in excellent taste. The pulpit and pews are of ciled walnut. and the carpets and cushions dark grees. The ceiling isarched, and is 47 feet from the floor in the center of the build- ing. The organ (31 stops) is of chestnut fin- ished in oil,and was builtby Wm. A. John- son, of Westfield, Massachusetts, at a cost of 34,000, This builder is not much known here- about, and the fine quality of the mstrument a= demonstrated last night will serve to give bim 4 reputation in this quarter. Previous to the commencement of the con- cert, the pastor of the church, Rev. B. Peyton Brown’ arked that the audience should not in- dulge in clapping or stamping. by way ot ap- plause, but thet they would content them- selves with euch marks of appreciation of the exercises as should not ba nnseemly in the house of God. The audience, considerably enthused by the performances of organist GG. W. Morgan. (of New York.) and the vocalists, Mrs. Kretschmar, Mrs. Buits, Mrs. Street, and W.H. Burnett, were somewhat puzzled how to signify their approbation within the bounds prescribed, and finally fell torattling their pro- grammes, snd after a little practi it was as- tonishing the amount of noise they managed to raise in this manner. The good pastor iooked ittle doubtful at first, whether or not he should exlarge his specifications to embrace this astounding rustling of programmes. but finally smiled a genial smile as it he had made up bis mind that they might as well goit until he had of portunity to consider the mat- ter. The following programme was performed to such general satisfaction that it was unani- mousiy resolved to repeat the concert on Fri- day night next I. Heshortly Twards heard a sound as of something thrown mto the water. Meeting with detec- | tives Clarvoe and McDevitt, on 10th street, hy related the circumstance, and the detectives went immediately to theplace. Detective Clar- voe, by getting scme boards and making a tem- | porary platform to the middle of t reached the spot designated, and fished up a large carpet-sack, containing a lot of copper | and nickel cents and sma!i stl ver coin, amount- | ing in all to more than $30), besides various in- | siroments and number of bills for purchases | | made by some person named Walter Jones, of Madison Court-House, Va. The carpet-sack s were quite a heavy lift. but the | arried them to the police headquar- | ters, where they can be identified by the owner. There ts a strongsuspicion that the carpet-sack and contents are but the refuse of a larger job done up by thieves. eee Pn oe A Harp Casx—Yesterday afternoon, De- tective McDevitt was on the train from Balti- more, when a boy about 16 years old was put on the cars, to come to Wasbington to look for an uncle residinghere He says that his name is Wm. He bought some things in Reading, and had #2) left. He went to a hotel to change his clothes, and afterward, walking about, three men met bim, and said they were looking for a boy who had stolen a valice. He gave them his keg to examine bis valise, and one kept him in con- yersation while the others went for his yalise. When he went to look for his valise it was gone and the men ciso. He worked his way to Baltimore, where he was furnished with a pass to this city, where be 's he has an uncle, named Henry Thompson, a carpenter. Tne boy is stopping at Police Headquarters. aa = THz REGULAR MEETING of the Republican Association was held jast night at Room No. 71 Washington Building.
