Foundry.— At the Foundry Ohureh the meet- ings were largely Attended, and the services ‘Were of & very interesting character. In the Morning. after the choir had sung two or three of the tme-bonored hymns of the ehurch, Rev. Dr. W. Hamilton, new stationed at Ry- land Obapel, delivered the sermon, taking for bis text the 3st and 32d verses of the i8th chapter of Matthew. He first spoke of the ac- tion of the Generai Uonference in recommend- ing the observance of the centenary duriag this month, and proceeded to review the early days of the church in America from the first eilorts of Philip Embrey, Capt. Webb, and Robert Strawbridge. The first conference was held in 1773, at Philadelphia, and before its meeting there were thirty societies in Mary- jand, established directly or indirectly by Straw bridge, one of which was at Rock Creek, near Georgetown, whieh formed the nuclens of the Georgetown ¢hurch. In 1734 there were S2 preachers and 16.c00 members. He referred to the introduction of Méthodism by Jesse Lee, and the manner im which it had been pushed ior ward throughout the country. it bad grown with the country, and has now one million of members, fi'teen thousand preachers, and in- cludipg & branch of the church of the same name, there were two mullion members. in conclusion, be said: “Oh! my God, bless the Methodist Ouurch and may ie bless all Churches of our section and land -who have at heart and are earnestly striving to send the Gospel to every creataze under heaven. So our great business is not lo rest in what we aaye @ amend, and terminate our asxieie. upon | curselves, and say we are=afe at any cate! | No, we are not: only as we consult the -afety | of others, as loug as we do this, God will be a wall of fire around os. The Methodist Churen | should look en the state of Protestantiem. Di- vided it ought not to be. It ought te be the Tost united body under heaven, and <he great effort of the coming century shomld be to secure’ | 2 proper anderstanding as to the great princi- | ple of Methodism, by which we are to subdue the smful world and hasten the millenium. The jaymen’s meeting was held m the eve. | ning, and was very largely attended, the house | being crowded to its utmost capacity. There | ‘were representatives present from all the Me- ihodist Chur >hes in the District. Messrs. D. A. Gardiner and Jacob Hines, the two oldest continuous members of the charge, were called | on to preside. and after brief remarks by the | former, Mr. Jas. Laurenson was introduced. He read a very minute history of the Charch, | in which he described the condition of Wash- | sngten when it was on paper. The first record ot Methodism in Georgetown appears in the Balumore Conference records of 1794, but it | was not until 1903 that the society was provided | tor, when Wm Waters was appointed. The society worshipped im a cooper shop until I-06, when it removed to the oid citadel, near Kock Creek. At this time there was asmali bend on the Point, and on the records of (Georgetown charge, April, 1 appears reso- lutions providing for the payment of the preacher's salary of $167 per year. At this time the only roads were what are now called New Jersey and Pennsylvania avenue, be- tween the Capitol and President's House, the latter being through an almost impassible marsh. in 1Su3 there were 109 white and 47 colored Methodists. In 1804, 29 white and # colored. In 1505 conference aesignated Washington «sa separate station—the membership in Washing- ton and Georgetown being 173 whites and 137 colored. In is, Washington had only 6! white and 25 colored; Georgetown 110 white and ® colored, and Alexandria Isv white and 2l4 colored. In 1405 Washington tooka new Start, and had % white and 44 colored. In Ist2 at fell to 91 white and 55 colored. In 1513 Wash- ington had 115 white, 69 colored; Geofgetown 14 white, 1i7 colored. In 1815 the Baltimore Conference agreed to set off Foundry Church as an indeperdent station. Henty Foxhall agreed to build a house of worship on the pres- ent site. It was dedicated Uctober Ist, 1515. At ibe annual cenference of |>17 it 1s certain the Foundry wasan adjunct to the Georgetown Church’ Juse after the war with Great Britain church matters moved slowly. Filty-one years ago we commenced with 107 members, some of whom were probationary; the city | was sparsely settled, and discouragement was | allaround. To-night the Foundry can rejoice in its 40 members and an edifice of S1U0,10u: at least 500 Sunday school children, 5vofficers and teachers, and 1,200 voumes in its library, be- sides Biole classes. Hon. N.G. Taylor, of Tenn., spoke of the ort- gin of the Chureh in the old country aad its erowth in tous, and referred to the duties of the church. There was great responsibilities rest- ingon it, and, although, from one preacher and five members there were now 6,00 preagh- ers and 2,W0U,040 members, to say nothing of the +,000.000 of attendants there was a large field before it, for in the common conrse of events an 34 years there will be a population of | 100,000,000 in this country, and in seventy years | of 246,000,000, Sbort addresses were made by Messrs. T. P. Morgan and John C. Harkness, the tormer grv- ing some interesting reminiscences, especially of the first Sunday school in the District, which was organized at the Foundry in 1$19 by Rev. John Emory. which, however, was not pernia- nently established antil 1$22. Into this school the ragged children were brought and clothed and fed. Daring the day the claims of the church were Urged upon the congregation, and cards were | distributed for subscripuons. Vinth-street Church—At Hamline Methodi<t E. Wesley Chapel.—At Wesley Chapel, exercises ‘were commenced at half-past nine o clock, with a grand class and prayer meeting, which Was presided over by Thomas Havenner, Fsq. A sermon was then preached by the tev. Dr. A.H. Ames, after which the centen- nary collection was taken church was densely crowded during the exercises, General Grant being among those present. In the afiernoon a celebrauon was held by the Sabbath School connected with the eharch, Mr. David A. Burr, superintendent of the | school, presiding. Mr. Audrew B. Duvall. the | Secretary, read & report showing that the {| school bow numbers 53 scholars, snd 3S teach- ers, The library comprises £70 volumes. In con- nection with the school there is a Mission, ot 15 teachers and scholars. It was announced Amounted to over three hundred doliars. and is was expected the sum would be increased. McKendree Chapel_—in the afternoon, the cen- tepnary lovefeast was held at McKendree Chapel, which was attended by many of the oldest inhabitants of the church in the net, and many interesting experiences were re. lated.
