Provisions—Bacon continues in a very good demand both for home consumption and to fill Sowtberm orders and bas ruled firm, re- ceipts from the West being very light and. the stock much reduced. [Lard has been inact and quite Heavy. Bolk Meat is sear steady. Barreled Pork is higher, but in the absence of all speculative demand the market i# unsettled. A Prisow OUTBREAK ABOUT Toracco.—The Toalon journals give accounts of a serious outbresk among the youthful convicts confined im & penitentiary in the Ile de Leyant. A feel- ing of diseatisfaction was expressed among the convicts that they were not allowed longer periods of recreation and permission to smoke fobaceo. Stephenson, living near Mill Creek Chaurch, in the victnity of Glencliff Station, on the Nashville and Chattanooga railroad, and his whole family were accideataliy poisoned Thursday night. It appears that Mr Stephen- son had procured some arsenic for the purpose of Killing rats, and this poison had been placed upon a shelf where. afterward, some baking powders were laid. Mrs. Stephenson made the mistake, putting some of the noxious drug into biscuits, wRich she baked, and of which the family partook. Aimostimmediately upon Tising from the supper table Mr. S. was taken With vomiting, and very soon his wif:, the children, and some colored persons living ar the house were taken violently ill. Suspecting the cause, an examination showed the trne state of the case. Not being able to Procure Medical attendance immediately. Mr. Stephen- on swallowed a piece of tobaeco himeelt, and induced the otherstodothesame. A physician was called in a8 soon as possible, and assured | the parties that the tobacco had undoubtedly acted &s &m antidote. All of the parties bid fair to recover. A MuRDER AND ITS Cavses—A week ago Sunday, Charles H. Bent, agent of the Associ- | ated Press, was in Louisville in company | wih a woman, and in two hotels was caught | 10 fagrante delictu. He returned to Nashville and denounced tbe report as untrue. A dis- patch from Nashville says that on Monday jast C.H. Bent was killed by Hugh McGav- | ick. who stationed himself in an ice-houseon | Cherry street, and waited for Bent tocomeont | ofa book store. Hehad a can of kerosene, with which he saturated the cushions and every part of the ommibus, aud set fire to it. Just ashe was abo step out of the omnibus he wis caugh , the ‘bus was dragged from the building so as not to set fire to that, and the inceadiary was kept im the burning vehicle till be was pearly burned alive. His clothes were burned from his body, his hair from his head, and his Whiskers from his face, the imtention being to make him confess to other crimes, and te de- clare Bis accomplices. This he would not do, denying apy other crimes, or having an: le complices, He said. however, that far ridge hired bim to burn the omnibus, because i¢ was insured for more than it was worth, and he wanted to secure the insurance. Russell was then lodged in jail. A CavcTion.—We mention the following asa caution against the bad babit which many girls and young ladies are addicted to, of placing pins and neediesin their mouths while engaged in sewing. Miss Mattie J. Bigelow, Gaughter of George Bigelow. Esq., of Show- began. has been in poor health for two past, and at mes raising considerable Stood and suffering severe pain in herlungs. Last fall sbe went West. and stopping on the way with some frends, was so jJow im health that ber life was almost despaired of. She re- covered. however, and on arriving in lowa, was very feeble for some time. At Jeugth a sore gathered on her left side, from which great difficulty was experienced until it broke, sod a needle came trom it. The physician who attended ber gave it as his opinion that the neecle had passed through both lungs, thus caosing the severe pain and ill-health.
