OE THE EVENING STAR. Exploits of Virginia Morse Thieves. Edward S. Wright and George Campbell: twoof the three prisoners that were te have been tried in Leesburg, Va, on Monday last, for horse stealing, broke jail oa Saturday night Borhof them were ironed, bat not- standing tDis they succeeded in removing, ly with & saw, one of the iron bars of dow looking tato the jaii yard, and then digging @ bole large enough to craw! through, hteem iuch brick wall which sar- rounds the yard. L. T. Lovett, who was con- fined ip the same cell with them, chafged with same offence, Is still there, he says he was Court, a special guard was appointed fo keep Watch at the jal) nntil after Circait Court, wtio were om guard as usual that night—bat in the face of all this extra vigilance the prisoners made their escape, and their absence was not covered until sometime afer daylignt Sun- ‘y t™morning—making seven prisoners et have escaped through the same window with- om the last few months. Atter leaving jail, Wright and Campbell “borrowed” two horses from Mrs. Rachel Hoge, but after riding them a short distance discoyered that one of them was raiher indif ferent, and they turned him 10ose and supplied Bis place with a very fine animal belonging to Jonah Nichols. On Sunday morning a party ‘went in pursuit, and the fugitives were over- hauled at Middletown, in Warren consty, Va., about daylight on Monday morning, by the ursuing party, Messrs. J. M. Hoge, Edward w. Tayior, B.T. Janney, Isaac C. Hoge, and H.R. Holmes. They found them at a public hotel, in bed, locked im the embrace of Mor- pheus, dreaming, doubtless, of the friend they “Jeft behind them.” They had but one pistol, and that unloaded. When aroused they at. tempted no resistance. The owners received their horses, and on Tarsday morning the prisoners were brought back to Leesburg, where they are once more lodged in jail. On Monday morning, Landon T. Lovett (the dero- tional horse-thief) was placed on trial, for borse-stealing. An effort was made to have the case continued. but without success. The trial was then proceeded with, and the case submitted to the jury on Tuesday, who, after an absence of about two bcurs, returned into court with a verdict of guilty, and fixed the term of imprisonment in the penitentiary at fourteen years. A PROTEST AGALNST LaDiEs’ JocKEY Hats. A milliner—one of the working class—protests against the “unsuitable and immoaest wearing of jockey bats by ladies,” on the following grounds: “It is doing us poor working girls a great barm. One milliner can make five jockeys where she can make but one bonnet, thus throwing us entirely out of employment, and forcing usto seek work distasteful to us or starve, and many will be forced to seek their daily food in sin and misery. Were we doing &barm toother trades I would not write to you, but we are not. It takes as much materi- al for the rousd bat as for the bonnet, and frame makers would — making the bon- net frame to the round hat. Our only hope is that by the jockey hat being ridiculed in the daily papers, and by writers, we get the ladies again to wear &@ more unassuming and chaste covering.” Hick Gamue.—A foreign paper publishes the following anecdote conceruing the Emperor of Anstria while out shooting:—His Majesty is always attended by a Captain of the Guards, whose duty it is to observe the effect of each shotand announce it. The Emperor, for in- stance, strikesa partridge. « Partridge!” cries the captain. Nexttimeitisabuck. “ Back!’ sbouts the captam. One day the Emperor fired, missed the game, and wounded one of the gentlemen ot hissutte. The latter, on being struck, uttered an exclamat “His High- ness the Duke of Hackenberg!” announced the captain, without the slightest change of feature or tone. HAUNTED.—The people of Kinderhook are an & terrible state of excitement over a haunted mill. The inhabitants of the piace go about with uplitted hands, and horror expressed in their countenances, at the « didos” cut up by “the witch of the mull,” a& they cali the strange apparition. Monday, the witch is said to have exhibited herself, running along the eaves, mounting the cuopalo, throwing bric! Stove-pipe, plank and everything else im- ginable at passers-by. Some aver that the mill machinery was in fuil operation on the a ee in question, and the building illumina. ted. A SaGacious YORKSHIREMAN.—An English paper relates that a Yorkshiréman whe had auended a meeting of the London Anthropolo- gical Society, was asked by a friend what the Jearned gentlemen had been saying. “Well, L Gon’t exactly know,” he replied, “there ure many things I could not understand; but there was one thing I thought [ made out—they be- heve that we have come foom monkeys, and I thought as how they were fast getting back again to where they came from.’ Biastine Rocks witu Nitro GLYcertne. Tbe North Aaams ( Mass.) Transcript enys tt experiments were wade three days last week with nitro-glycerine, mm the heading of the west end of the tugnel, with good success. Fitteen feet progress was made at that time. On the foetung three holes were made and biasted, which resulted in throwing out reck that took three days to remove, estimated at sixty yards. Electricity is now resorted to instead of fire in setting fire to powder as well as glycerine. CoNCERNING Pixs.—Fifteen million pins are said to be daily called for in Engiand,in which two thousand seven hundred and twenty-seven pounds of brass wire is consumed. Some idea of the consumption of brass wire in the manu- facture of ping ip te gathered from the fact that one firm in Birmingham consumes one hundred and fifty tons per anaum, or three bundred and thirty-six thousand pounds. ScaLy FELLow.—A fisherman, arrived in the J. W. Oickerson, of Dartmouth, reports baving caught on the bank of Peru an eighteen pound cod in whose stomach was found 30 cents worth of scrip. Grave doubts are ex- pressed whether he came by the money hon- estly, but there is good reason to believe be got it all in the bank.
