Recovering as quickly as possible from Ris surprise, the gentleman commenced a search for bie missing companion, and, hearing sounds which seemed to come from the bowel sof the earth, he soon discovered she had failea into & cavern, wBich afterwards turned out to be aboateighty feet deep. Assis'amce was ren- dered by persons living in the vicinity as quickly as ‘sible by letting down bedcords into the hole, and after much labor the lady ‘was hauled up, to the gratification of her friends, very litsie inynred. The cavera into which Miss Sorey nad fallen ts a fearfal place, being about three feet in cirenmferenee at its moath, and eighty feet deep. This is effected = the sudden development of a large quan- tty of hydrochloric acid gas. The scientific principle has long been known, but it bas nev- er been put into a practical form. The car- tridges resemble brown paper parcels, and are of twosizes. No.1 is teight inches long and two and a half inches wide, and ts intend. ed tc be thrown by the hand into the heart of toe fire. A string is also attached by which it may be projected as from asling. The car- tridge is slightly explosive, so as to scatter the substance producing the extinguishing gae No. 2, or the second-sizea cartridges, are sim- ply thrown (the cover torn off) into the water of the engines, which they saturate with @ substance producing bydrochloric acid gas as soon as the water touches tae fire. Experi- ments have proved that one-tenth of the water that would have been necessary to extinguish & fire is only requisite when the cartridges are mixed with it, and that the saving of time is in the same ratio. They are very inexpensive. IntictT DisTi:LaTion im PRILADELPHIA.— On Wednesday revenue officers of the Necond District, Philadelphia, paid a visit to the Southwestern portion of the city, and made seizure of nine stilis, four ef which were in operation, and others had evidently been so within a short time. There would have been more seizures, but when the officers entered certain designated places, they found ev: ce ofa hasty removal, showing that information had been conveyedto the persons engaged in sificit distillation of whiskey. At some places the officers were resisted in the execution of their duty. As the Within a circuit of ut halt a mile, some idea may be formed of the extent to which the revenue law is violated within the city limits. S7 Last May a young girl named Miss Green disappeared from Peru, Me., and has pot been heard of since until last Saturday two men stumbled over her mouidering body as it I hidden behind a rock. It was a mere leton im clothes, all the flesh had disap. ed, and from the grinning skull the light air streamed bither and thither in the wind. Her family identified the remains by the clothes and shoes. which were well preserved, ana by herreticule books, cape, &c. lt ap- pears she purchased corro: sublimate, swallowed it and went to a lonely place to die, but the cause of the suicide is not revealed. ——— eee A QUEER Casz.—The testimony in the Dud- Jey will case, lately in progress in Albany, de- Yelops some interesting features of high life. It is alleged that he pensioned bh: black relatives upon Mrs. Dadley, and ¥ olently drove sway some of her near and dear relatives, not allowing them to enter her Bouse —N_ ¥. Herald. Peat in Matxe.—The Bangor Whig says <Owners of pent bogs are getting somewhat interested in their property just now, and are making anxiovs inquiries as to present or Prospective values. Af they do not commit the mistake of holding on for speculative prices, the article will, we think, come into general use ac a fuel, and will bring down the price of coal inour markets. If extravagant pricesare demanded, however. tor the lands (now nearly valueless to the ownere,) the whole thing wiil collapse, and the bogs may liea hundrea years before their contents are brougnt to market.” DiapoerrcaL = lyGenvity.—Ore Perrot, a Freucbman, has invented three terribly de- stinctive engines—the first, a three-barreled gun. firing one theusand bullets a minute, the boiiets dropping from a hopper withoat inter- Mission into the gun; the second is similar, but mounted on wheels; and the third is a steam locomotive, discharging two pounds weight of Projectiles per second, aud capable of killing ove bondred and seventy-two thousand eight bondred men in twenty-four hours, if butone moan was killed to every one hundred shots dischargad. @7 An Austrian chemist. M. Leinelbrock, has discovered a way of enclosing electricity in small gises capsules, which will explode un- der the infiuence of the siughbtest shock. The capsule is enclosed in a steel cone, so that if shot trom a rifle it will enter the flesh, and the explosion which follows is sufficient to killa mar. Experiments have been made on oxen and horses with perfect success; these animals baving fallen down as if struck by lightning.
