No one should fail to attend while the oppor- tunity is presented. an ae Tue PRInter’s STRIKE—The Act‘on of the Typographical Soc‘ety—On Saturaay afterno sn. anadjourned meeting of the Columbia Typo- graphical Society wax held in tae Council Chamber, City Hall, to hear the report of the committee appginted at the P igtrioneng meeting to wait on the Ployers and inform them of the Action of the society in adopting an amend- ment to the scale of prices t@ the effect that the wages of compositors and pressmen should be S24 per week, the day’s work to be eight hours from October Ist to April Ist: for extra work 50 cents per hour, and for work after midnight 75 cents, ie on morning papers. The pres- ident, Mr. J. C. C. Wbaley, Occupied the chair, and Mr. E. MacMurray secretary, and nearly every member of the craft was present. After the Cbair bad stated the ob: of the Teeting, & motion was made that all persons not ip good standing as members of the society sbould be excluded; but after some debate, in which it was argued tbat all craftsmen were interested im the movement, it was rejected. Mr Claxton supmitted the report of tne com- mittee. (Pablished elsewhere.) Mr. W. R. McLean stated, in reply toa ques. tion in regard te the reported action of the Star office, that in the morning the Star hands bad held a meeting and asked Mr. Wallach to with- draw bis name from the protest, and that after som~ correspondence had passed bet ween them, Mr. Wallach bad authorized the withdrawal of his name. (Loud applanse.] Mr. McNeir asked if it was considered that the hands at the Chronicle and Intelligencer of- fices were to be affected by the strike. He ar- gued that as the men m those offices were ‘working by the piece, they should not be com- pelied to strike. Mr. C. B. Hough urged that they must all stand together. He called attention to the fact that the proprietors of those papers had signed the protest, and if he was employed at either office he would not work until the name of the proprietor was withdrawn from the protest. if they wouid stand firm they would come oat Victorious. Mr. W. H. H. Towers offered an amendment | to the resolutiofis declaring that those who give the prices on their papers, and refuse to | sive them in their job offices, are not comply- | IDge With the rates. | Mr. Towers said he offered this resolution to | meet such casesas had been stated; both the proprietors of those papers are carrying on their job offices, and in them refuse to give the rices, He further said that the Jntelligenerr | ad wilfully misrepresented the action of the society. Capt. E. B, Robinson said he wae, the oldest floating element of humanity present, and was in favor of the movement. [Langhter and ap- Piause.} He thought, however, that there should be more uniformity, and that all the members sbonld work by the piece, or ail should work by the day. Let them take the bail by the horns. He was called “Bull” some- times. (Great laughter.) He loved the Society. He saw around Bim members who had been boys with bis own children, and grown up i= and pro bone with them; and he joved them ali the same as his own children. Let them s- ‘Swear tostand on the same con- glomerated us. Let the newspaper offices play around the circumference of the periphery of the circle; but let them stand together. He had suffered in the cause. He had beenin strikes before, and on one occasion, in 1535, he had walked about for 12 months, broke a rat’s head, and was sen- tenced to imprisonment for three months for it. At Richmond he had stood up for Washing- tomians. He knew that whatever the majority agreed to would be acquiesced in by the others, aud they must all put themselves on the same status. pApeese Mr. T. B. Taylor, of the Republican, an- nounced that Riessrs. Murtagh & Co. had withdrawn the'r names from the protest 10 the prerent. [Applause.} Mr. Cifixton explained the law in relation to the Governmeat office, and said that it wa unfair forthe pewspaper offices to sign thi protest. Mr. Judd said that whenever a member o the eee Was discharged by the operation of che rule, it was the duty of ali, whether piece or day bands, to strike. He spoke of the action of the Siar hands and the results effacted thereby, and said that had the mploy the other newspaper offices taken the Stand, the point of the society would nay EY already gained It had been stated that the proprietors of the Intelligencer did not sign th= protest in bebalfof the newspaper office, bu” ip behalf of the job office, and it hed been cisimed, therefore, that the newspaper hands bad not been effected. 1t would be seen, hew- | ever, that they bad signed the protest in the name of the newspaper firm of “Snow, Coyle & whereas the name of the job firm was . Judge contended that the newspaper offices shculd not be dragged into the move- ment. It was tyranny to deso. He went on to speak of the action of self-constituted com- Mittees going aroucd to the offices to compel men to strike. Mr. Towers asserted that the newspaper | publishers had certified falsely when they stated that they were not giving the prices. By their action they were depriving 7) men, wo- men, g.ris and boys of employment. . Ater some farther debate the amendment ‘was adopted—yeas 108, nays 45; and the reso- jution as amended was adopted—yeas 17, nays 26. ‘The other resolutions of the committee were = ted without debate. Mr. Towers stated that Mr Lem. Towers had not and would not sign the protest. Mr. McNeir stated that he had called on the publisher of the Chronicle, and had received | from him « note withdrawing his name trom the protest. Mr. M. Caton stated that the Messrs. Rives Would withdraw their name from the protest Mr. Cowing stated tnat his brother, of the iirm of Cowing & Turner, was in favor of the scale Sworn certificates were presented stating | that McGill & Witheiow and W.
