The arrangement of the maseum is very creditable, and all the articles being highly polished, and the whole room being kept scrupulously clean, the museum is @ very at- tractive spot General Ramsey has placed the museum im charge of Sergeant Hartnett, who has shown much taste and bestowed a great desl of care on the arrangement of the trophies and arms. in the gun shop, formerly im charge of Mr Jobn G. Dudiey, and since in charge of Mr Stabl, there are now but I7 hands employed During the war there were about 250 men and boys kept busy. In the machine shop Mr George Wright has at work but 19 bands, in- cluding the engineer. During the war as high ascS bands were employed. Mr. Meiants, in the gum carriage department, now works but 30 men in place of the 80 employed during the war. The saddlers’ and harness makers’ cepartment, in charge of Mr.Goodwin, worked over 20 hands during the war, put at pre est there are bat 4. Besides these the enlisted men at the post number %. Several of the storebouses bave been closed and the attend- Ants discbarged. ‘The work of improving the grounds, com. menced during the war under the supervision ef Col. J.G ton, is stillin progress uader the supervision of Gén. Ramsey. grounds north Of the old penitentiary building have been graded, and on 4% streeta fine pavement bas been lad, along Which trees have been set our. From this pavement to the seawall along the Potomac the ground slopes gradually, and on the other side, when the canal is completed, under the superintendence of Mr. Wm. J). Wise, (who expects to close up this fall.) the space will be graded. At present this portwn of the ground is covered with gun carriages, used at the forts and by the different batreries curing the war, closely packed, while the guus have M arranged on the green inside of the orignal arsenal enclosure. The old penitentiary building—in whose pre- cinets are the remains of Mrs. Surratt, Payne, Herold and Atzerott, of the conspirators, and Wirz the Andersonville jailor, buried near the fast, where the scaffold still stands, und of Booth, in ene of the rooms near the west end— is still Standing, the War Department not hay- ing yet approved the pians for tearing it down and usimg the old material in the constraction of the —— warebouses this side of the building. It is generally regretted that this work bas not been commenced, as the building is ap eyesore, and the place could soon be made = very attractive spot.
