Sisughter-houses in large cites are knowa to bave a dele erious effect on the health of the inbabitants, and in consequence of this fact and the danger of driving heated and infaris‘ed Animals through crowded streets, the authorities | of Paris many years since took the matter into serious consideration. The result establishment of “abattotre,” being large siaugbter-bouses outside the city limits, where all butchers are compelled to pursue their avocations. The Last Railroad Accident, MEADVILLE, Pa., Oct. 15.—The accident on the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, near Union, yesterday, resnired in the death of one passenger -M. EB. O. Mathews, of Elmira. The accident was caused by some murderously removing a rai! from the track. The company has offered a reward of | two thousand dollars for the apprehension of | ings, with @ sufficient number of spacious feed | And sale pens acjoinit and with all mecessary or desirable sppurttenances for conveying, teedi snd msk-ng comfortable, and finally slavghtermng cattle, sheep and hogs. Thereis an usloading platform, store-heuses for hogs and sheep, and & siaughter-house 360 feet Jong by % feet wide, and two stories high. ‘The first floor is for the slaughter of cattle only. It contains thirty-two close pens, be- tween ech two ot which there is a gut room, ‘where the entrails of the slaughtered animals are cleansed. The close pems open into the body of the house, and out of them the cattie are “roped,” then killed, then bung up, all by steam power. The cattle are not slaughtered inthe usual way, by knocking head. They are hoisted py the while they are thus bung they are etrack There are also ample arrange ments for the ecurmg of bides on the ground, of which many dealers will doubiless avail themselves. Sixty feetiof the Southern end of the baild- ing are devoted to “rendering” purposes. ‘There are arso twosteam pumps, one for feed- img the bouler, and the other for distribati Z the water in various directions about the build- ing. £0 arranged that if at any time the supply fail back upon the salt water, which flows up to and under the building. There areal o two large botiers to supply steam for “ rendering” Purposes, pumps. Steam is alwavs kept up, and,aia moment's notice, the pumps can be set at work. At the north end of th iiding is a large ice-house, ninety feet long, forty feet wide, and three stories bigh, (rising one story above the main building,) in which meat may be pre- served in bot weather. The slaughtering ca- pacity of this building is estimated at 1.200 head of enttle in an ordinary working day of ten hours, and of course, when necessary, this ca- pacity can be doubled by employing a fresh set of Bends, and working night as well as day. ‘The second story of the ighter house is ser apart for the slaughter of hogs only, with banging accommodations for 6,000 dead ani- mals. The sheep siaughter house is twenty- five feet long by for -y-five feet wide, and two stories high, and in it can be “ bandied” in a Working day of ten bours, upward of 3,000 sheep. The company have already made arrangements by which two hundred tons or Tore of meat cam be daily transported to New York and distributed among the varioas markets. On accoant of their economy, safety, and convenience, we have no doubt ofthe ultimate adop'ton of abat‘ours in all o PENSION DECISIONS. ‘The Commissioner of Pensions has made the following decisions in regard to the legal limi- tations as to the date of commencing pensions: 1. Quite a panic exists amongst oyster eaters, hereabout, in consequence of reported cases of fatal sickness at Annapolis and Baltimore after partaking of oysters. The conclusion has been jumped at that the deaths were from cholera; brought on by eating oysters, but it would ap- pear probable that the disease may be the same that prevailed amongst oyster eaters in 154, and the supposition ts that it comes trom eating oysters that have become tresh and unfit for iood through an unusual fallof rain. in this connection we would point out the neces- sity for some legislation by the City Councils or eome action by the Board of Health to pre- vent the sale bere of damaged oysters. Some- | sentenced to one month's imprisonment in yal times a whole fleet of oyster schooners, de- tained by storms or contrary winds, arrive togetoer, with cargoes of stale or damaged oysters, which are pushed upon tke market or | shacked at the wharves by contrabands and peddied through the city. The enly protection now sfforded to the community is through the action of the harbor-master and the sanitary officers, whose powers sre limited. It would also seem desirable that there should bea sworn measurer for oysters arriving at our wharves The oyster bushel of 1966 is said to be infinites. nnally small. A leading restaurant keeper on Pennsylvania ayenue tells us that his oyster wagon, which. five years ago, would hold but twenty four bushels at the utmost, now ac- commodates thirty buskels with the greatest ease. See THE BEW YORK ELECTION. The New York Tribune shows signs of alarm lest the Radicajs should not carry that State in the November election. It is admitted ia the Tribune that if the Republicans do not exceced the vote of 1865, by 50,000, the party is beaten, We quote: “Last year, the curre:t set strongly for us, and we carried the State by Thirty Thousand Majority; yet we did not poll so many votes by over Saag! | Thousand as we did the year before. To carry the State at all this year, we must poll at least Fifly Thousand more votes than we did last year.” THE CITY'S BEWABD FOR TH - NATION CONSPikaTOs | Sst Messrs.
