THE EVENING STAR, A STRANGE STORY. genious Fraud of a Frenchman—He Fol- tews his own Coffin to the Grave. [From the Liverpool Courier, Sept. 28} For some time past a case of a very remark. able character bas been occupying the att tion of the London detectives. It appears that Rot long &go an ex'ensive wine merchant of Bordeaux, by name Vital Doust, went to Paris and assured his lite in an office there to the amount of 100,000 franes. He afterwards re- turned to Bordeaux, attended to his business for a while, and then failed. As some rather suspicious circumstances attended Bis failure, @n inguiry was made, and the result was that Douat was declared to have been a frandulent bankrupt. Tne extent of his frands are stated a 24,00 francs. He left France suddenly, and about & month afterwards his wife attended at the insurance office in Paris, aud presented a certifica’e containing a or, of the register of the death and burial of her husband in England. Of course Madame Pouat ciaimed the amount jor which ber husband's life was insured. The French officiais were consulted, and payment of the money was not only refased, but the facts, so far as known, were communicated to the authorities in England, with a request that @ thorougb investigation might be made. Inspector Williamsen placed the case in the Bands of Sergeant Druscovitch, who was puz zled at the commencement of his inquiries by finding that the copy of the register was bona Jde, and tbat the funeral had actually taken piace. Although thus bauiked, the de.ective did mot give up the game. He hunted al the places in which Douat had been whi. known to be aliy t nd found that when he nd he stayed at Ford’s 1, Manchester street, Manchester Square, the name of Roberti. When he had t the hotel a few days he indaced a ch waiter there to write him a certificate am English to the effect that Vital Douat died of “aneurism of the heart” om Dec. 29, 1565 This was on the 26th or 27th of the month. The certificate purported to be signed by Dr. Critue. Armed with this forged certificate, Douat went on New Year's day last to the registrar of deaths at Plaistow, Essex, and, as- suming for the time the name of Bernardin, he hed his own death registered in the ordinary way, and stated that his dead body was then }ying at No. 32 Ann street, Plaistow. On the same day he went to the sexton at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Low Leyton, and producing the registrar's certificate, he ordered a grave to be made, paid all the regular fees, and appointed the Sauday following for his interment. Not satisfied with what he had done, he returned to London the same afternoon, and going to an undertaker in Mile-end-road, he purchased a full-sized ready made coffin, and ordered a leaden lining to be put within it. When Sunday came he called at the under- taker's rather unexpectedly. paid for the coffin, and having engaged two laborers, hnd it con, eyed to the Shore ditch station of the Great Eastern Railway, and from thence booked it for Leytonstone, going bimself, as a matter of course, im the train which carried his coffin At Leytonstone be bired a cart and the funer- al proceeded to be cemetery, Douat himself the chief and only mourner. The service was performed by the Rev. Mr. Mc(Juord, and it 1s said Douat performed his part of the ceremony With becoming solemnity. Having by degrees obtained the above facts, Druseoviteh obtained an order fram the Home Secretary for the exhumation of «the body,” and with it he and Inspector Williamson, and two gentlemen who bad known Douat and could ideatify him, dead or alive, went down to the cemetery. Half sceptical as to the infor. mation they bad received, they armed them- selves with sucb charms against the noisome- ness of dead bodies as are supposed to be eff>c- tual, and the grave being dug into, the coffin lifted out and opened, they were considerably relieved to find itquiteempty. 1t was neces- sary now to ascertain where Douat really was, and before long the detective found that he had Jeft England for America, and so could not be produced toanswer a charge of fatse registra- tion. This strange story is made mere com- plete by the mformaton just received, that Donat, returning from Amer; nad been given over tothe French authorities, by whom he will be tried tor the fraudalest bankruptcy andthe attempted fraud ont Paris Insur- ance Society.
