The young scamps go about their mischievous pranks with a degree of system that secures them generaliy agamstcaptare by the police. They eet out sentinels at each corner of the street, and then annoy every one who ap- Prosches the office. 1f a policeman ts seen ap- proachimg the sentinel calls to his comrades, «Lookout !" and ina minnte they disperse till the officer passes to another portion of his beat, and then they return and resume their pro- fanity and indecency. The only way to caten them is to place an offieer, without his uni- form, on duty there. This morning Lieuten- ant Skippon, on his way to the Ventral Guard- house, eame upon the crowd before they had posted their sentries and arrested two, (Robert Smith and William Washington,) causing a dispersion of the crowd in every direction. ‘The two prisoners were taken to the Central Guardbeuse, and were committed to the work- house by Justice Thompson im default of $2 each. Buryert, Taz HcUMORIET.—Metzerott Hall Was last night crowded with the elite ot Wash- ington, and Mr. Burnett, who has been so bighly extolled by the press.all over our jand, more than aeligh'ed the vast assemblage His inimitable delineations of character elicited | round after round of applause, whilst the beautiful poetic selections of Miss Nash were Tecetved with marked attention. Miss Nash's rendering of the part of the Widow Chillingtone was “par excellence,” whilst Burnett's Sir Edward Ardent was rendered as only Burnett can; but the most surprising of all was the wonderful rapidity with which Mr. Burnett made his changes of costume. Instantanepns | is the only word that will describe it; whilst ts face as quickly underwent a change to suit he pumerous charncters portrayed. We advise to see Burnett to-night; if you fail to doso u will miss a rich treat, and lose one of the beartiest Igughs that would otherwise be in store for you. t A Suspicious Packack—This morning, a ro named Rebert Witlis carmed a new oilia rope (apparently just fitted for the rigging of @ hoisting tackle, it having the block and book attached) aud a smaller rope, also new and just fitted for use, to the store of Mr. A.D. Taylor, at 7th street bridge, and offered it for sale at 35 cepts per pound. He said he found it lying on a wharf near the old stone house, near Rock Creek, and seeing. no one about to whom it could belong. he took it. The explanation did not satisfy Mr. Taylor, who arrested Willis and turned him over to officer Leach, of the Secona Ward. Willis was taken to the Central G uardhouse and beld in custody, by order of Justice Morseil, for turther hearing. <a Horse STeaLine.—Thongh so many horse thieves have been arrested in this District Within three vears past, and sent to the vari- ous States in which the offences were commit- ted. or tried bere in the Criminal Court, the business has not been discontinued, and oper- ations appear to be again increasing. Notices are received at police headquarters daily from Maryland and Virginia, of depredations in those States. Several parties have been ar- rested Tecently and turned over to the State Autborities, with the stolen property, it it Goes not seem to check the operations of the thieves. ——— ea STEALING PaNTALoons. — Yesterday, officer Lesch, of the Second Ward, arrested James Alien, colored, tor the larceny of a pair of pants, the property of Julia A. Williams. Tne pants were recovered and the accused was taken to the Central Guardhouse. Upon searching bim the officer found upon him a silver watch supposed to have been stolen trom another person. Justice Morsell post- poned the hearing in the two cases until this morning, when the witnesses were ordered to appear. INTERESTING MEETINGS_At the Island Baptist Church, Rev. C. ©. Meador, pastor, a very interesting series of meetings is in pro- xress, and there is a prospect that the meetings will result in much good.
