THE EVENING STAR. INCH BY INCH. One fine morning in August! arose at bot f dawn, and bad just finished dressing mysel! when an old black woman put ner head into my room, exclaiming: “Hy, is you dressed, masea!” and seeimg that 1 was, she went on: I bring = and cigars; how de dis maan- massa ‘Come in, Judy,” l answered; “I’m all right. But what is the matter? You t look weil.” “iis rader poorly, tank God!” she replied. Judy did not leave the room, as usual, when 1 bad taken my coffee: so, knowing that she bad got something on her mind, of which she wished to disburden herself, I said: “Well, Judy, what is it?" = “Will masea look at de ‘rometer bum-by?” “Look atthe barometer! What for, Jady? “1 tink we is goin’ to hab hurricane.” “A burricane! Why, there was never a filmer morning came out of tne heavens.” «Dat tor true, mass, but we is goin’ to hab hurricane for all dat. Massa no go to Paradise Wainnaie paradise? Why not Judy?” “Not “Paradies nice place in fine wedder; buthim too much near de mountains for safe in hurri- 1}, I'll look as the glass as soon as I have finished my coffee; bat as to not going to Para- dise, that’s out of the question.” The old woman left me; and, finishing my coffee, I stepped out to examine the barometer. It stood at 30.0, and, as 1 have said, the morn- ing was a splendid one; so, knowing that there Wasa young lady at Paradise who was ex- pecting me, I laughed at old Judy’s fears, and determined to start. At this moment my friend came bustling out of bis room. “How's the glass, Tom? Judy says we are going to have a storm, and she’s always right. “Nonsense!” I replied. “The giass is as firm asa reck: and as to Judy’s feelings, that’s all nonsense.” “Ab! but I tell you itis nosuch thing. I’ve been it four hurricanes, and Judy has toretoid every oneofthem. We may not get it to-day; but she’s better than any weather glass; so if you take my advice, you will defer your trip to the Gordons.” “Staff!” 1 replied. “I gave my word, and go Ishall! 1 don't want to drag you ont, if yon’re afraid, but you must not think to frighten me.” “Ah, my dear boy!” answered my friend, “when you have one taste of a West India hurricane you will not want a second; besides, there is not a worse place in the island than that same Paradise of Gordon's. The wind gets between those two mountains, and Tages up the valley like mad.” «I was Ged impressed with my friend’s ad- vice, and loth to leave him, for I perceived that he was really in earnest; but, truth to say, there was acertain Mary Gordon at (the name, by-the-by, of her father’s plan- tation.) for whom, as sailors say. I had a sneaking kindness, and nothirg short of the absolute presence of a tornado would bave eo me. Besides, 1 was in full healt and spirite; and it was not a 4 that I, who had been knockieg about in all of the world, could sympathize with feelings of ancient black woman, er with those of the climate-worn and sensitive old planter with whom 1 was staying. Mount. ingimy horse, therefore, with a black boy fora guide, I started on my journey. 1 rode on a brisk pace, for there is something im_the early breeze of a tropical morning which is peculiarly refreshing. and a:ffases a Duoyant elasticity into your which is only to be med by active exercise. In ition to this, the scenery h which 1 ‘was traveling was of the most encflanting de- scription; while I, with a light heart, was speeding on to seek a creole houri in a trophi- cal “Paradise.” I had forgotten my guide, and had ridden so far that I felt certain I had jeft him far behind. 1 was about to take the one to the = when a voice behind me ex. claimed: +! do wrung way, massa; de lef is deright way.” 1 turned round in surprise, and there I bcd j little black guide cling- ipg to the horse's . The horse. I presume, Deing used to this sort of thing, took no notice of it, though the young rascal bad in bis hand ® pointed stick, with which at times he accel- erated the animal's movements. The road, though it proved s very bad one, ‘was wild and picturesque in the extreme. it tor the course of a deep guily, whose sides became more and more precipitous as I Sdvanced, but were covered with a green and luxuriant vegetation, consisting of bushes and creepers, the blossoms on which were marvel. ously beautiful. Arer wending for some distance through the bottom of this ravine, I at last emerged into the open country, at a spot of peculiar beauty. Onmy right and left rose high mountains, whose peaks, now and then visible through the clouds, seemed to reach the heavens. The whole of these mountains were clothed with a tual.verdure, while before me was a val- ley spreading out in grassy slopes to the edge of the sea. i had never seen anything so truly grand. I was fascinated; for in no part of the world is the imagination so powerfully affected by scenic effect asin the tropics. The majestic grandeur of the mountains, the mingled beauty and variety of the vegetation, and the deep and sombre fores:s, were all new to me. Then tbe strange con volutions of the clouds, which, pressed by the wind against the opposite sidie of the sierra, came rollingand tumbiing over the mountains, now concealing and now dis- closing some of the most romantic spots in na- ture, exciting im me suck lively and rapturous interest as could not be easily forgotten, “Massa no get to Paradise dis day if him “wp looking at de mountains all de maaning,” said my little guide. , Admonished by this Lagain started. 1 naa not proceeded much further when I perceived that old Judy's prognoeucs were not without their significance, for @ brilliant though omi- ows scene presented itselftomy view. A tre. mendous bank of biack clouds had risen up, as it were. out ofthe bottom of the ocean, and bung almost stationary on the distant borrizon. I was looking at this when allatonce it seemed Moved as by 8 mighty wind; mass after mass of mu: vapor rolled up, and spread them- selves ath wart the heavens. “Hurricane do come, massa, nuw for true!” cried my little Cupid. “Ole Judy always right; and massa no make haste de rain catch we.” 1 did not heed what the boy said. fer it was & strange and magnificent sight upon which I was gazing. It was Peace and War Personified; but alas! the blue sky, the emblem of peace, pons a oe up by the rolling cloud, whi e majesty of angry nature. ‘was bastening to blot outali that Semana of USpquilit, '. Atlast 1 turned togo. Both my horse and my guide seemed impressed with the necessity of exeruion, and 1 found myself. as it were, racing with the storm; but before I could reach my fru 's plantation the clouds were flying over my bead. and the wind was bowling aloftas though a gale was blowing; though, below, there was not a bresth of air, not aleaf stirred, and not a ripple ruffied the placid sea. Paradise now ——— in view; and it well deserved its name, & more beautifully sita- ated place 1 had never seen. By the time I reached the house it began to rain, and, leap- ing from my Borse, I dashed up the steps into theball; I was warmly greeted by Mr. Gor- dan and histwo daughters; for ag Mary ‘was not b oa so demonstrative as Grace, the glance of hereye and the rose upon her cheek told me that I was not unwelcome. “V met weed pe are come,” said Mr. Gordon, “though we Rotexpect you. During breakfast the wind increased in violence, and by the ume it was over the hurricane had commenced in good earnest. Mr. Gordon seeing this, immediately set about making preparations to withstand it. Win- dows and doors were hastily and strongly barricaded, and the most portable articles of value, together with a quantity of Provisions, Were conveyed down a trap-door into a cellar, Built on purpose for safety during hurricanes. This was scarcely accomplished when the field-bands and the whole Population of the Village came hurrying up to seek for shelter eens with their master and his jamily. Meantime the whole sky bad become as black as nigbt, the clouds as they advanced Geecenuding almost to the surface of the sea. whieh was now lashed into the wildest fu by the gale. Every now and then flashes of the most vivid lig btning barst from the clouds, pe descenoing were instantly engalied in the sea, the next they reappeared from beneath the white foam, and apparently ~ cending toward the sky were met by other —— hovering ape in pens je ‘bunder barst crashes over @ur heads, waking up the echoes of the neigh- boring mountains, and very eanaatten; the rain, too, descended in cataracts; it seemed as though the flood-gates of heaven were opened and the eternal waters — down upon us.
