LOCAL NEWS. A GOAT ON THE RAMPAGE.—Last Thursday might it was very dark, particularly in dismal Suburban localities, where the infrequent Bas. lights are allowed to flicker or go out, jast as they choose. Sothought Jim M. as hecarefally groped his way along a gloomy th hfare im the First Ward, occasionally stumbling over the broken pavements. Notalamp was lighted, and his mind naturally reverted to the current Stories of garroters and other midnight ma- Tauders, who waylay unsuspecting pedes- trians. Suddenly he heard a loud ery for help, a heavy fall, and then exclamations of «*D—n you, let me oR! Would you kill a man while be is down! You infernal devil, only let me get on my feet, and we'll see if you'll zourder mein this way! Help! help! This was startling, but our friend’s nerves were unshaken, and he at once hastened towards the spot from whence the cries proceeded. The first sight which he descried through the dark- mess Was @ man lying on his back, with his Bands and feet in motion, as if to-ward off an attack. Standing over him wasa goat, which, every time he attempted to rise, would settle him on his back again with a Well-directed bu t. Jim M. resis‘ed his inclination to laugh, as the situation was a critical one for the but. ted indiviaual, and at once attacked the victor. The goat, finding “another Richmond in the Meld,” at once turned his batteries on Jim, with such good effect as to cause his hasiy retreat toalamp-post. Here the fight was kept up for some time, until the goat, finding the iron was too hard for his head, gave up the butt direct, and improvised an oblique movement, by which be flanked the lamp-post, and planted some telling hitsin Jim’s side and stomach, and elsewhere, which foreed him to climb the post. Here he was, in a nice fix—«“treed” by a goat. From his secure but uncomfortabie perch be launched curses both loud and deep at bis imperturbable antagonist, who took it coolly. only walking around and rearing up occasionally, shaking his horns in a bantoring ‘Way, 4s if inviting Jim to come down and re- mew the combat. The lately prostrate indi vid- ual had in the meantime regained his feet, and joined in the “cussing,” but at a safe distance. At this juncture footsteps were heard ap- proaching. and Jim called for help. «Is that you, Jim !" said a voice. “ Yes,” said he; “is that you, McC." « This is me,” came the an- Swer. “but what is the matter: Jim ex- plained the difficulty, when McC, nothing daunted. at once “made for” the goat. That pegnacious animal, undismayea by the rein. forcement, met McC. in mid career, and pro- jected bis horny head “with the force of a bat- teTing-ram against the stomach of his new en- emy, who was “doubled up” by the blow. Straightening himself slowly, McU. saw «Bil- ly” poised for another attack. Thoroughly de- moralized, he turned and fled, closely pursued by his remorseless adversary, and his speed somewhat accelerated by one or two butts in the neighborhood of the coattail. Seeing an open door, in McC. darted. and closed it just in time to receive on the paneis a blow trom thi: animated catapult which shook the hous While ibe chase thus brought to a close was in progress, the other two combatants followed | up the common enemy, (not too closely,) and tried, with a continuous volley of stones, to “knock his blasted horns off. this landable effort they were unsucc « Billy,”’ finding the door between him: nd his laie enemy, now turned bis attention to these irate pursuers, but they scattered at approach. and disappeared in different dire. tions im the darkness. leaving him the vicior on this well-fought field. Now for the melancholy sequel Such prowess should not avail. This demoni- acal goat, who has borne for some time pasta bad reputation in the First Ward, and who stunk im the nostrils of orderly and peace- loving citizerls of non-combative dispositions (and others as well) was evidently not satisfied ‘With victories so easily gained, but like Alex. ander of old, sighed for more. At any rate he must have sought and found, during the nicht, some more subtle or powerful adversary, tor in the morning he was discovered by an early riser, stretched on the sidewalk, cold and dead. A melancholy victim of cheap boarding-house keepers, who cume to look upon the remains, suggested as a fitting epitaph for the deceased, “This strong butter is done for.” but his rank joke elicited no response from the stolid West- Enders. If there are any skeptical readers who doubt the truth of this narrative, they will find it fully confirmed by the statements of numerous residents between the Circle and the Observa- tory, if they will take the trouble to inquire tn that neighborhood. And to any one who says it is not possible that a single goat should place three men hors du combat, we vouchsafe only this reply, “Butt, he did.” ea A ReD-HEADED Despemona IN Love wita 4 Nerecro.—Saturday morning, Kate Ford, Annie Merrin and Francis Merrin, colored, were arrested by Lieutenrnt Tait and Officer Leach of the Fourth Ward, on the complaint of John Wallace, colored, for disorderly con- duct, and they were taken pefore Justice Bates for trial. It appears from the statements of the officers, that Wallace was in ihe Centrai Guard house Friday night, and Saturday morning, Sarah Schofield, a red headed white female, who has a peculiar affection for Wal- lace, undertook fo carry his breakfast to him. Kate Ford, who claims Wallace as her own, heard of it, and her jealousy wasexcited The two Merrins sympathized with her: and the three together went to Wallace’s restaurant on C street, between Eleventh and Twelfth, and after inquiring of him whether there were not wemen of his own color good enough tor him, and why he should run after white women, gave him such an unenviabie tongue Jasbing, flavered with profanitythat he had them arrested. Kate Ford and the Merrins were find $5 each. This did not satisfy the injured Kate. She went after the red headed white girl and thrashed her, anda neha, Alas! that scene ensued between Kate and Ida Schotiel sister of Sarah. |Officer Leach arrested Kate ¥ord again and Ida Schofield and took them before Justice Bates Kate was fined $3 and held to bail for peace; and Ida Schofield was fined 33. ——» A CcTtixe AFrFair. Yesterday, several colored men, employed by Mr. J. W. Piant, undertaker, on 7th street, between G and H, were in Mr. Piant’s stable, and one of them, named Oliver May, asked another named James Henry Booth, alias Martin, for a dollar that Booth owed him. A disputeensued about the amount, and Eooth proposed to pay 75 cents. ey. refused to take it, and said he ‘wanted aj! his money. An angry conversation followed, and Booth drew arazor and crt May on the bead, making a gash five inches in Jength.. May retreated to get astick. Booth followed and seized him, and inflicted another gash in May’s left side, about 73 inches in Jength and 1 in depth, and twoslight wounds in bis hands. Dr. Evans was called upon and Pesossees the injuries severe flesh wounds, ut not necessarily fatal, Booth was arrested by Lieut. Skippon, of the Third Ward, and taken before Justice Thompson, who sent him to jail for assault and battery, with intent to kill, and fined him $2u for carrying & con- cealed weapon. ————_s—_. Gazette. CITY ITEMS. THE inventive genius of our people has not been typified m any branch of manufactures toamore striking degree than in theart of making jewelry, at such prices and of so ad- mirable imitation of the genuine article as to defy the criticism of even the most experienced, and as to come within the reach of all classes. We were forcibly reminded of this fact bya re- cent visitto Prigg’s wholesale and retail dollar jewelry store, No. 435 Pennsylvania avenue, near 44 street. While all the precious stones are so aptly copied and setin the most ap- proved styles, probably the success has been greater in the fashionable jet jewelry than in any otherbranch. Bracelets, chatelaines, and neck-chains and breastpins, can there be pur- chased of asuperior quality, and weare not surprised that they are so eagerly sought for. Mr. Prigg also received last evening a splen- did collection of bog jeweiry, in combs, long drops, and pins, being the latest style of jet goods manufactured. —-——_—— HENNING’S SATINET Suits for $10 and $12.
