WAS srrested by officer Peaster, of the Aiken” 8d, who dehyered im to Wise and Y pesos ‘ouage of fighting whisky on board, went | ing his Excellency the | Opening of the WATIONAL THRATEE. ‘We dropped in this morming at the «Na- tonal”—so rechristened—and found the piace & scene of rusbing activity peculiar to a large theatrical establishment on the eve of re- opening. Scenic artists, paper-bangers, up- bolsterers, carpenters, @As-fitters, and ma- ehinery men were plying their implements with bury Assiduiry: hough to the casual eye things looked rathor “m.xed,” it needed but & sbort survey of the premises to see that very brilliant results were Tapidiy being evolved from this hurly-burly. Upon the stage, a brace of actors were rehearsing a fencing scene; while close at band. and undisturbed by the clatter and bustle, Mr. Lam» was putting in the rapid effective touches upor the new act curtain. At the box-office front and elsewhere was a busy set of theatrical folk arranging all the myriad details of the new scenic play for tne opening—in short, the whole establishmen Up stairs aud down, was a scene of bustle am excitement. ‘The result of all this labor must be that the « Nationai” —ex-“Grover’s”— will hardly know itself. The auditoriam has been greatly improved: the fronts of the parqnette, family- circle and gallery haye been painted a deili- cate lilac, and ornamented in relief with clas- sie female heads in plaster, surrounded with lowing scroll-work. The private boxes have been refitted ina style to adap them for the use of the most fastidious. Internally, they Sre delightfully cosy and luxurious, aud the outer decorations of coloring and gilding are marked by c much better taste than usually ebaracterizes such adornments. The new act eurtain upon which Lamb is engaged will add Much to the attractiveness of the place. The picture, styled «The Dream of Areadia,” after Coles’ celebrated panting, is embraced in a gracefully ornamented oval. Lamb has in this instance shown his usnal good taste in choice of subjects for effective and pleasing curtain scenes. A teature worthy of notice is the arrange- ment of the foot-lights, which are sunk into the stage in a concave metalic screen; thas avoiding the unsightly and inconvenient per- pendicular shades formerly in use. The green room and dressing rooms are being newly pa- pered and carpeted, showing that thoughtful attention has been paid to the comfortand con- venience of the company, as well as the an- dience. Ope notes, in passing behind the scenes, the ample supply of fire hose by which, in case of fire, the theater could be flooded with wa- ter almostinetantly. In act.in refitting tne theater, every improvement that experience or gvod judgmentand good taste could suggest, has been adopted witnout regard to cost. The entire building. we may say here, has been completely renovated: and not an unsightly or defaced object meets the eye. A new entrance has been made to the galery, directly from the street, westof the box office, whereby no little pressureis diverted from the main en- trance through which the gallery occupants formerly passed. Further facility of egress 1s also made by constructing an ontlet-door at the westside of the dress-circle. By these means the theater can beemptied in very much less time than beretofore. The gallery en- trance and stairway is alsoof such width as to allow of easy entrance and exit In the dress. a great improvement has been effected, ing the platforms holding the rear rele chairs, by whicb means ocenpants of these favorite seats have an uninterrupted view of the stage Externally, we note many improvements, Ameng which is the elevation upon the roof ot laree lamps, calculated to throw a flood of ligbt ppon the street front. The alterations in the house have been made under the superintendence of Messrs. Kelley & Gross, the machi {8 of the theater; the drop aud actcuriains by Lamb, the scenic artist or the National; the frescoing is by Oarstein: painting by Zachary & Spalding: and the up. bolstering by Joun Alexander. Contemporary With the progress of the work of renovation and adornment is the extensive work of prepara- tion by another set of mechanics and artists for bringing out the new spectacular play which has had such a run elsewhere, styled the Ice ¥ and which affords Getz. of Baltimore, an opporivnity to employ all his resources aad talents in the way of scenic display. It is de- signed to bring this play out in effective style at the National, as a demonstration to some ex- tentof the capanpilities of the establishment. The immense stage of the National—one of the a. } largest in the country—affords unlimited range for the macbinist’s art, as does also the ample Wings and great pitch of ceiling. The stage, by the way, bas been entirely reconstructed for the new season; and particularly witha view to the adequate personation of the +Jce Witch.” This piece, which requires an army of periormers, will have in leading parts the Fowler Sisters, danseuses, Bangs, Bishop, comedian.) Miss Josephine Tyson. (Ice Wit b,) Mrs. Fred Williams, commedienne and vocalist, and Louisa Glasford, from Niblo’s Garden. as the Sun God. The /ce Witch isto be followed by a line of performances sufficiently varied to suit the ya- riety of tastes, and which will bring before us during the season such stars as Ristori, Jo Jef- ferson, Jas. W. Wallack, the Maretzek Italian Opera Troupe, Maggie Mitchell, the Webb Sis- ters, &c., &c. The regular company is not yet fully made up, but will embrace sach per- formers as Mr. Spackman, (Stage Manager,) Mr Bangs, Mr. Jeffries, Miss Josephine Ty- son, Miss Adele Plunkett, Mrs. Germon and Mrs. Williams. The general management of theestablishment will be in the competent bands of the proprie- tors, Messrs. Spalding & Rapley, and the pub- lie may thus count apon liberal catering for their amusement, and ample arrangements tor their comfort and convenience. ‘The task of securing first-class stars—theatri- | ealand operatic—for the National, has been judiciously confided to Mr John T. Ford: who, by securing the same performers for engage. ments at his Holiday Street Theatre, in Bal i- more, will be “killing two birds with one stone,” and will,in the double engagement thus offered, be able to afford irresistible in- ducements to first-class talent. We look for an exceedingly brilliant season at the National. It will possibly open en Monday night, bat certainly in the early part of next week. CITY ITEMS. —_e—_—_.
