THE EVENING STAR. Fire at Sing Sing, N. Y. VIVTY FAMILIES RENDERED ROUSELESS. ‘The village of Sing Sing wes Sanday morn- :mg visited by one of the most destructive con. fagrations known in the history of Westches- ‘er county. Ata qoarter pasttwo o'clock a m.afire was discovered in a barn adjoi tne residence of Joseph W. Willis, andaltnongD | prompt efforts were made to subdue the flames, the fire spread with great rapidity, and less than balf hour extended to a block of dwellings and storeson Main street. At the same time the Vam Arden File Works took fire, and, despite the efforts of the firemen to extinguish Ue flames, the entire building, to- | «eltber with the dwellings and stores, were en- | urely consumed. A very strong northwest wind was blowing at the time, and the flames were driven across the street to the terminus | ot Main street, or the lower dock, where they quickly communicated with a row of build- +p gs—principally dwellings and stores—on the opposite side of the street, and ® lumber-yard, a@.i of which were totally destroyed. Twenty dwelling-bouses were burned to the ground, and their occupants, numbering apou: fifty Jamilies, are made houseless by this verrible calamity. Many of the persons burned ou: were laboring people, who lost all or nearly all of their furniture; and the scene represented as the daylight cameon was of ‘be most saddening that the eye was Tr called upon to witness. One lady, who nad been ili for some time with consumption, was removed ‘o «a residence near by, but so great excitement under which she labored she expired in a few moments after ar riving there. Two women who had been re- cently confined were removed, and were at- tended by a physician, who did all in his power to make them as comfortable as possi- bie Tho total joss by this fire will not fall tar shor: of $200.00. The buildings were frame structures, with but one exception, and owing to the high wind and the insufficiency ofthe fire apparatus of the village, the flames rapidly consumed them. The firemen, however, worked bravely, and made every endeavor to stay the progress ofthe flames. but with no uvail. owing to the miserable apparatus with which they were provided. Nearly all the buildings on the lower dock were swept away, and the calamity bas cast = gloom aver the whole village. The bome- jess families were provided for by the villa- gers, id the American Hotel was thrown open to the sufferers, many of whom break- Jasted there, and received @very kindness that could be bestowed upon them. In the atter- bBeon the subject of the fire was adverted to by the clergymen of the churches. and collections ‘Were taken up to afford the sufferers tempo- rary relief. To-day a prblic meeting will be beld for the purpose of raising money to help the afilicted out of their troubles. ——————— A Mopvest Man ty A PREDICAMENT. —Mr. ‘Tom Loughrin is{ noted all over the city for his modesty. He stands six feet two in his stockings, and at least six feetofhim is made up of modesty. At an early hour yesterday morning Mr. L. was making his toilet at his residence on Pratt Avenue and Wainat street: he was standing in front of his m.rror, with only one garment on—and that a rather short one—and bad lathered his face preparatory to moving bis beard, when he was startled by a sbrill scream from Biddy, bis servant girl, and Bie wife; called to him that Bridget was on fire. Mr. L., with an admirable presence of mind, seized a quilt from the bed, and reach- Dg the bottem of the stairs at two jumps, soon enveloped the firming damsel ix the folds of the quiltand smothered the flames before the girl was seriously injured. While Mr. L. was ibus engaged some dozen iadies from adjoin- ing houses, hearing the sereams of the girs, Tushed in tosee what was the matter. They atrived in time to see the tall form of Mr. L. bending over the gir] and insteadof retreating when they noticed his Georgia costume, they stood looking at him with admiring eyes. Tom looked around and saw the ladies, and remem- bering that he bad not finished nis toilet, went Up stairs a little faster than he bad come down. The ladies tittered, and at every itter Mr. L.. accelerated his speed, and when he reached his room he was covered witha pro- fuse perspiration. He says it was the most embarrassing position he was ever placed in, and hopes never to be caught in such a fix again — St. Lows Democra: A Coow Hust iw KentUucky.—Miss Throck- morton, of Owensboro, sKentucky. loved Mr- Haines of that pla but her father did not. Mr. Haines was determined to bave her. He duced bis friends to get up a coon hunt, last week. to which the father—who was foud of the sport—was invited. While the stern par- ent was after the coo: is daughter “played porsum,” and ran y with her lover to Cincinnati, where they were married. Mr. ‘Throckmorton made no outcry about the mat. ver antil he returned from the woods: because he was not till then aware of it. His indigna- tion, when he wade the discovery, was great; but he reflected that what is already accom- plished cannot be prevented: so he smothered his grief and forgave the young couple. r Hatr-RKoastep.—The Jour- nal de Rowen relates that the incombustible person known as “the Fire King,” was going through one of bis exhibitions at Dieppe, dressed io bis apparatus, in the midst of a quantity of burning faggots, when those which jormed the vault over his head fell in. He staggered under the weight and went down. he rose and came to the ground. and finally managed to get out of the flames, but. after making a few steps. he fella third time, almost Uffocated. Immediate atrention was paid to = but his body was covered with severe urns. ee ———— SF The Richmond Times Teporter, who, While on a visit to Petersburg a few days since, rode out to the “Crator,” where the con- tractors are disinterring and reburying tne re- mains of Federal soldiers, thus speaks of the manner in which the work is executed: --It costs about & apiece to dig up and Trebary these Federals. But as the tax is three cenia per pound on cotton—about $15 per bale—we ean afford it,and “dem the expense.” It is dove very carelessly by the contractors. They just take a few bones. put enough in a box to rattle, call it a soldier.” and then rebury it at the cemetery.” ——_____ CAUsEs OF DgaTu.—The British Registrar General reports one hundred distinct causes of death in England, but mere than half the deaths in every year are due to one ur the ober of ten diseases. Thus, in 1864, 53.04 persons died from phthisis, +.%i9 trom bron- ebitis, 24.470 from pneumonia, 21.711 from rt disease, 29.498 deaths from old age. %%,- from convulsions, 29,654 from atrophy and ) persons from searlativa, 20,106 and 16,¢32 from diarrhea.
