The circumstances surrounding the melancholy affair are about as follows: For seme time past an infant daughter of Mr. Avdrew Crawford, residing in the Foartn Ward, Allegheny city, nad been suffering trem some disease peculiar to childhood. On Moncay mght the infant became very cross and peevieh and in order to quict her Mrs. Crawiord despatched an elder daughter up stairs for & bortleof Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup, that occupied a place with a number of other vials ef medicine, on the bureau. The little girl returned and handed her mother a bottle containing, as they suppesed, the sirup asked for. Without hesitating an in- stant, Mrs. Crawford filled a large teaspoon with the medicme and gave it to the infant. | The child became quiet immediately atter- ward, and the mother deposited itinacrib. A few moments after she raised the child in her arms, but jadg- of her horror when she dis- covered that the form of the little one was cold and rigid, and that a clammy death sweat had gathered omits brow. She hastened immedi- ately to where she had left the bottle from which she bad taken the medicine, and found that instead of the harmless sirup she had given ber child #n immense dose of landanum. ‘Three pbysicians were sent for immediateiy, and their united efforts were used to restore the child to consciousness, but it was 2]! in yarn. Death ensued in five hours atter the narcotic had been administered.— Pittshurg Ga- aette, Sth. Tre First TREATMENT OF CHOLERA.—It is now an undisputed fact, writesa Paris corres- pendent, that cholera almost invariably gives Rotice of its approach by a derangement of the dowels. If this derangement is combatted the oment it makes its appearance, one is almost Te to escape the disease. Medical statistics jow that of forty-seven thousand persons treated upon the first appearance of these symptoms, only fivedied The method gen- erally pursued here, upon Dr. Velpean’s ad- Viee, is to take six or seven drops of jannm upon alomp of sugar the moment the intesti- nal derangement appears. It this does not at ence check it, take an injection of starch, with six drops of jaudanum, retaining the injection as long a8 possible. One bour after the dose of jaudanom take six or seven drops of lauda- bom, and If necessary repest the injection. Mostof our physicians recommend the use of Jozengee of sub-nitrate of bismu'h. Monsieur Jutier Roussel, one of our best apothecaries, first made them, aud makes then better than anybody here. I would engage vour apothe- caries to order them on trial: for -hildren there 38 Do specific like them. Ti eya@re used io all our borpitals. Appeal, Avgust 30, says two well-known gentlemen of that city had a quarrel recently, and one of them appealed toa city official for advice m the matter. The latter, as a joke, Advised him to shoot bis advers: ~and gave him a pisto! with blonk charge in it. The bel- Jicose individual set forth to seek his adver- sary. and the offc al sent a policeman after Bim, telling him he was carrying concealed pons. The policeman arrested him, and as fined six dollars. The coart would not accept the explanation of the civil gentie- man who lent him the pistol and declared the whole thing a joke. S7 On toe way to Niagara Falis,a great dea ol merriment was creaied in the Presi ients perty by & rivalry, which sprang up between Grent and Farragut. At one or two plac he ladies kissed the naval hero, and had merely sbaken hands witm the unconditional Com- mander-in-Chief. «This said the general, «is easily explained. The admiral is so old that be ladies don't hesitate to kiss him, but don’t like to tske such liberties with a young man hke me.” Against this the admi- ral lsugbingly protested, ascribing the imputa- crn upon bu fe to jealousy. A PLeasaxT Daive.--Mr. B. J. Brownell ‘was oriving down hillin Syracuse, N. Y., Monday, when his horse stumbled. pulled him over the dssh-board and landed him on the thrills, crosewise, just bebind the borse. The quacruped was a quiet animal. but this was too much forbim. He started o1 a full run, turned & sharp corner. overturned wagon and man. and all rolled together down the hill. Mr. Hrownell was badly bruised, but not seriously injured He did not enjoy nis ride. S7 When Frankfort was Prussians, Mr. Murpby, our Minister there, was told, according to a letter-writer, that treops would be billeted on the American re: Gen & as well as the citizens of thetown.
