LonponpeRry, Sept. 4.—The steamship Damascus, from Quebec, has arrived. Moistenm the Air. Itis important to remember, at all times, when s:tificial warmth is needed, that heatng the air Das the peculiar and remarkable effect of causing it to take up and secrete a large Smeunt of water. Air that at the freezing peint is damp when heated to 70, er a comfort- abie condition, so bides away all the moisture that it is umpleasantly ary; it then absorbs the moisture from our bodies, and from our lungs, and pro duces a teelingof uneasiness. Itsucks cut the moisture of the furniture, causing it to warp or crack, if not fallto pieces. When it comes in contact with thecold glass, and is re. duced in temperature, it gives up the hidden vapor, and thus cold windows and walls tend to still further dry out the air. To make the at- moephere healibful, as well as agreeable, al- ways keep — the stoves, cr over the heating furnaces,a full supply of water in wide open top or loosely covered vessels, to constantly evaporate moisture to saturate theair. This is equally important forall living organisms in a room, for plants as well as animals, and in eburches and school-rooms. as well as, in private dwellings. Drawing Water in Barrels. Itoften happens when cisterns and wells become dry. tbat water must be drawn in barrels placed on a sied or stone-boat. Ifthe distance is copsiderable, a large portion of the water will be threwn out over the top, unless some precaution istaken. We haveseen cloths and blankets spread or tied over the topsof the barrels, which answer the purpose very im- perfectly at best. The wider the barrel or tub, the more readily the water is thrown out, be- cause alarger wave is formed on the broader surface. The more this surface ts contracted, the less chance there will be for the formatien of the wave and the consequent dashing over of the water. This points out a very simple and efficient remedy. namely, a floating board an inch or two less in diameter than the tub or barrel, so as to be easily placed in and removed. ‘The narrow space sround this board is toosmall for any Waves to rise, and the water may be thus drawn in perfect safety over the roughest road. This method is adopted in the large dairies in Holland. where the milk is drawn on wagons, and where a floating board pre- vents any waste of milk.—C. sirens Gentleman. S77 A correspondent of the Springfield Re- publican, writing from San Francisco, tur- nishes the following incident, so borrible in its Getails thatthe pen of a Hawthorne might ‘Weave it into 2 romance. “Complaint was made to the health officer that the occupant of @ bandsome residence in one ef our fashionable = orters was creating a nuisance by keeping @ corpse of his wife in the building, to the great discomfort and til health of the neighbor- hood. Itappears that the wite of the person complained of died about a year ago when the busbaod purchased « metalic coffin and placed the corpse in one of the rooms of his residence. It was alleged more particularly that the day previous to the complaint he had taken the bedy from its coffin and washed it with a gar- den bose, afterward replacing it in the coffin where, at the time of the complaint, it still re- maimed. Sincere as was this evidence of un- dying and unalterable affection, the spectacle of that stricken and inconsolable widower ng the garden hose upon the decom posed ims of his former partner seems to nave teo much for the neighbors. The health officer thonght so too, and the nuisance was absted. The whole picture. with tts terrible muingting of the gbastly and ludicrous, re- quires no comment.” palace Saas Es Ie Se S7 A gentieman,in 4 farr and regular stand- ing none of our fashionable city cburches, ent one of our leading music shops some ince, and stated his wishes in this wise: ¢ you Solomon's song!
