THE EVENING STAR. AFPAIRG IN MONT@OMERY.—The Rockville Sentines of Saturday & The Camp Meeting te sourberm portion of the Methqdiet | », held for & week past, near Ciarks- v.m tbis count @ very interesting assembiage. From the accounts of these who a tended it on Sunday last. there could not bave been fewer than six thousand persons on which the camp was d tothe purpose. be- ing thickly covered with thrifty timber, with A gentie descenton all sides. and well sup- plied with copious springs of the purest water. The;r &cher’sstand was filled withaeompany vi able usnisters, amongst whom we noticed the Kev. Mr. Head, who, long ago, ministered in Rockville. > nd of whom we had not beard fer many years. uur it vas been proceeding sin Week, and cases have been disposed o: Honor Judge Berry, as rapidly as circumsta! ees allowed Many cares of felony and mis- demeanor have been submitted to the Judge, and thos disposed of more rapidly than they could bave been by & jury trial. There was another case removed trom Frederick to this county. This was the case of young Cecil, who had been in the Confederate army, and was indicted, through the vindictive spite of Abolitionis for horse-stealing. The jnry was impanelied, and four witnesses examined, Botone of whom knew anything about the ease A good deal of time, and mach ingenuity and eloquence have been expended on the cases fof Nicholas King, who was indicted, in two s. of procuring money under faise preten- ees, and ove of bigamy. The cases. on the part of the State. were ably managed by Mr. Bouic, the State's Attorney, and the pote AS weil conducted by Mr. Nelison, of Frederick, and Mr. Williams, of Rockville. On Wednee- day last, King was convicted of procuring money under false pretences from Mr. F. L. Kidwell, of this place; and,on Thursday, he ‘was convicted of the same offence against Bar- rett Prettyman, Esq., Clerk of the Circuit Court for Montgomery county, and also in the bigamy case. AcctDEeNnT at Caps IsLanp.—The season at Cape May closed iast week, nearly ail the visitors having left the principal hotels. The latter part of the season was very delightfal, tme latter most agreeable. Our corres- pondent informs us that the only serious acci- deut which happened there this summer was the drowning of a man, on Wednesday last, pamed McGinness, a very respectable and worthy gentleman of Philadeiphia, much esteemed on the Island. He ventured out teyond his ability to reach the shore, in com- any with a lady, who, it is said, had chal- asea bim to follow ber as far as she would venture, and when exhausted he sunk. She being able to float, remained on the breakers until the surf-boat rescued her. NoRTHERN EXTERPRISE IN GEORGIA.—A correspondent writes from Madison, Ga., as follows $a notable incident I may mention that two nerthern gentlemen purchased from Colonel J. B. Walker twenty-seven hundred acres of d, in the spring, at $12.50 and $20, plowed one thousand acres with two-Norse turning-plows, introduced all the implements for planting and cultivating. much to the amusement of many of those weddei to the drill-tongue and scooters, and 1 am informed that their crop is the finest in all the region, and that, with no further calamity, they will make enough to pay for their farm this year.’ Iterr1a EmMIGRANTS--The negroes who pessed through this city Jast Autumn from the neighborhood of Lynchburg, on their way to Ba jwmore, from which place they sailed fer Liberia, have safely reached their journey's end. They sre said to be a valuable accession to the colony, and a working people, and are getting along J emt ni magn ‘heir lands were drawn from the South Est of Carysburg, and within afew months, they have cut, cleared and planted. and erected sixty houses. The mortality from fever has been quite small among them.-—Alez. Gazette. PolsonED.—Tbe Wanbury (Conn.) Times Says several persons were severely poison d on the grounds of the Excelsior Clud at that piace, Saturday, by a creeping plant common- ly called mercury. The Times says: “Wesaw one of the victims, Wallace . Hyatt, and found bis face so swollen ana distorted from ats effects as to be barely recognizable We understand that the poison was received by the reflection of the sun from the plant.” S7 A wealthy widow in Pittsburg fell in love with the coachman who drove her to her busband’s grave and finally married him. He unfortanately had a wife living, was arrested for bigamy aad implored hrs second to farnish bail. She chacked him playfully under the chin and bade him gotoja:llikeaman. That’s the latest gossip in Pitteburg. S7 The American missionary at Oroomiah, Persia, writes that the high price of cotton goods conseqnent upou the American war, bas led to an immense increase im the culture of cotton in Persia. The geniaji climate of northern Persia is very favorable to the pro- duct, with the exception of some exposure to heavy frosts. S7 The St. Joseph (Mo) Union says that farmers residing a few miles south of that piace represent the frost, on the morning of August 21, sothiek on the fences that they could write their names legibly in it. Not a ‘Week previously the thermometer in that re- gion indicated a temperature of 100 deg., and even higher. a7 A ‘ze fight took place on Sunday be- tween Ted Romiey, of Brooklyn, and John Cody. of Redbook. near Sheepsvead Bay, be- low Brooklyn. Thirty-nine rounds were fought, tbe fight lasting an beur and ten min- utes, and Romley was declared the winner. No arr were-made. 7M.
