THE EVENING STAR. * Terrible Story—Murder and Canibalism. {From the Helena (Montana) Rep., Aug. 2.) From reliabie sources we learn the foliowing parucolars of a tragedy which took place be- Jond the range, and whieh would be worthy the umes of (he Borgias. Some time in May jast a man representing himeeif to be a m: ter of tbe gospel stopped at an Iriehm: ranch, situated on Tobacco Plains, on the road from Pend d’Oreille Lake to the Kootenai nes. Here the reverend gentleman remained queer &iubg me. Soon aner he made his ap- perance the Irishman was missed from the lo- canty, but as his place wasin a remote portion of the n'Ty, and as Mountaineers sre pro- veroially of a rambling disposition. lit le notce War taken of bis disappearance. In the mean- time the quonaam preacher stepped into the shoes of his former host, became a veritable Tanecbero, and eseayed to keep a public house, taking pains to imform allinquiring friends of the previous proprietor that ue had bought out the Irishmen, and that the latter had gone to the lower country. This seemed a | psy wes sory. and was readily believed until one day some friends of the missing man, who had been calling at the bouee, and after searchiag for their horses. found human bones and acom- plete hand, upon which they discovered freckle marks. After this horrible discovery they de- manded an explanation from their late best, and were informed that the remains in question belonged to an Indian that had re- cently been killed, and that he would barn inem. No sooner was the conversation ended than the supposed ex-preacher commenced to carry his intentions todestroy the remains into effect, Dut the friends of the missing Irishman, mistrusting that all was not right, deterred bim, and commenced closely questioning bim. When finally driven to the wall he madesuch confessions as proved him to be the most guilty wretch that ever disgraced God’s footstool by bis presence. He had never bough* theranch, but bad forged a bill of sale from his former jandiord and afterwards murdered him. Not fatisfied with this, our informact tells us, he Racked to pieces and cooked the corpse of the unfortunate man, and served it up in variously prepered dishes to travellers stopping at his piace. We rejoice that the villianous bypo- crite bas been hung. Protecting Trees against Werms. The bandage system, which we were the first to suggest some fifteen years ago, and often referred to since, is the only etfectual provec- tion we have yet seen against the operation of the worm in fruit trees. We repeat again, that in not a single instance have we ever had & worm in our dwarf pear trees where this system was properly followed. It is simply to bandage the botiom of the tree with any kind of mashia or cloth, and tie it, letting the band- age be abeut six inches above ground, and two inches beiow. 1t should be applied in Februa- Ty, OF &s soon As the ground isin @ fit condition to go upon. These bandages should be remov- ed atthe end of October. As long as this is continued we defy the worm. The bug lays itseggs an inch or two above the ground early ia the spring, that is, as soon asthe warm daysin March will admit ofits coming forth from ts winter quarters; the eggs are soon batched by thesun, being laid on the sup side of the trunk, and the young grub finds its way down tothe soft bark beneath the soil, ‘where it gradually works its way in. The bandage prevents both the laying of the eggs and the descent of the grub. t doubters try it. Une man will bandage two hundred trees inaday. Wehave nodoubdtit will also protect the peach tree in the same way .—Germantown Telegraph. ps.—Tom Brown, author of makes the following telling of “beards.” “i ag for beards out and out, because | think the Maker of the beard was and is. This is reason enough: but there are many others. The Irery of shaving, its expense, its consump- tion of time—a very corporation existing for no other purpose but to shave mankind. Campbell, the poet, who had always a bad ra- zor. I suppose, and was late of rising.‘ said he believed the man of civilization who lived to be sixty bad suffered more pain in littles every day in shaving than a woman with a large family had from herlyings-in. This would be bard to prove: but itis a process that never gets pleasanter by practice, and then the waste of time and temper—the ugliness of being ill orunsbaves. Now, we can easily see advan- tages in it; the masculine gender is intended to be more out of doors, and more in all weathers than the smooth-chinned ones, and this pro- tects Bimand his Adam's apple from harm. It scts as the best of all respirators to the mason and theeast wind. Besid bottle- brush, but such a beard as Abrah-m's or Abd-el-Kader’s. It isthe beginning ever to that makes all the difference. 1 bazarda ry, that no hair of the head or beard should ever be cut, or needs it, any mere than theeye- brows or eyelashes. The finest head of hair I knew is one wRich was never cut. It is not too Jong: it is soft and thick. The secret where io stop gTowing is in ihe end of the native un- touched bair. If you cut it off, the poor hair does aot know when to stop; and if your eye- ws were so cnt, they might be de to g over our eyes, and be wrought Beside, think of the waste of sabstance ven of the body in hewing away so much hair | every Morning, and encouragimg an endless | rotation of crops! Wellthen, 1 go in for the beards of the next generation, the unshora be- mgs whose beards will be wagging when we are away: Dut of course they must be clean. But bow are we to sup our porridge and kail! Try it when young, when there is just a shacowy down on the upper lip, and no ‘ears but they will do all this ‘elegantly’ even.” AFFAIRS IN HaRFoRD Cora the following from the Belair 24 Extraordinary Luck.—A few days since.
