‘THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. FUNERALS Y estenpaY.—The funeral of the Inte Wim. J. Stone took place yesterday trom the Cbhureb of the Ascension, where the services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Pinaney, pastor, and Rev. Mr. Buck, of Rock Creek. The coffin was covered with black velvet,on which Werte beautifal flowers, and was borne by the following :-—Hugh Caperton, Judge Wylie, Joseph H. Bradley. er., Phillip R. Fendat, Wm. R. Woodward, Wm. Redin. Wm. . ‘Webb, and @harles Mason. Esqs. There were & large number of the many friends and Ine tives of the deceased present, among others nearly every member of tne bar of this eity, and msny prominent members of the church ot which the deceased was a member. The remains were interred at Rock Creek Caurch, in the county. The funeral ot another old citizen of Wash- ington took place yesterday, viz: Mz. A.B McFarland, and was very largely attended. ‘The remains, encased in a bandsome coffin, were accompanied by the relatives of the de- ceased, escorted from the residence. corner of izh street and the avenue, by the Washington Commandery of Knights Templar, to the 4th Presbyterian Church, where the funeral ob- sequies were held, after which the procession moved to Glenwood, where the remains were interred The funeral of the late James W. Spaulding, Commissioner of the Second Ward, took place yesterdey atternoon, and was largely attended. Mayor Wallach, and the Surveyor. Regist and other Corporation officers, members ot th Councils, and a large number of the friends were present. The corpse was taken to St. Aloysius Church, where the solemn burial erviee was performed by the Rey. B. F Wiget, after whieh the cortege proceeded to Monnt Olivet cemetery, where the remains were placed ina vault. The coffin was a very fine one of mahogany, over which was a beau- titul wreath, and was born by the following pall-bearers: Charles Stewart, Col. S. W Owen, S. W. Tracey, J. J. Chaves went in his honse and got some liquor and treated his companidéns at the door, and they parted. The next morning he missed his money. and informed the detective. The money was ken from the pocket next to Cayanaugh, and @ detective ascertaining t the first com. panion was above suspicion, and that Gava- navgb unfortunately bears = bad reputation, made the arrest. FIRE.—This morning about 4.30 o'clock fire broke out in the building on B street, bet ween loth and |ith, known as St. Charles restaurant, kept by Sidney McFarland. colored. The fire was discovered by two colored men, who slept there, in the rear of the bar where were three barrels all empty. Liquor was spread over the floor, and it is supposed was set fire, as the men say there was no fire or hghts in the house. The building belongs to A. T. Hill. aad the stock to McFarland, both insured, the lat- ter for $1,200. The firemen and police were promptly on the spot, and the damage to the building will hardly exceed 21,000. The loss in stock of the restaurant has not been esti- mated, but Is supposed to be very light. Scicrpe.—The we of inquest held on Sat- urday by Coroner Woodward, in view of the body of John H. Krafft, returned the follow- ing verdict:—That the said Krafft served in the Federal service; was a German by birth; and was found in the river on the evening of the 31st August: was seen intoxicated through- out the day; and in the opinion of the jury, from the fact of his previously threatening to take his life, and also from the fact of his using no exertion tosave himself or crying | out for help, that he committed suicide by drowning himself. Deceased was poor, and had bo property.
