Clay Gooding was calied to th» ir. oe J. < rem acet the name of @ association be « The Conservative Soldiers’ nd Sailors’ Association.” After some debate, the motion was with- drawn. The Chair stated that he had received a com- munication from the Army and Navy Union of the District of Columbia, informing the meeting of their willingness to unite in the movement, which he read; and, after it had been accepted. the commitree on organization retired to meet the committee from the other association. During the absence of the committees, the Meeting was addressed by Major Foster and Lieut. Richmond. «, The commitiee, after a short absence, re- turned and, through Lieut. Gooding, reported that they bad agreed that the Associations shoulc unite under the name of the Conservya- tive Army and Navy Union. That they had agreed that the offices should be vacated. and that the meeting should elect a president and vice president. Thereport was adopted. The mecting proceeded to the election of Officers, which resulted in the choice of Col. James R. O'Heirne, president, and Col. James A, Tait, Ist vice president. Capt. Gooding suggested that the association electa vice president from each State, but it Rochon not necessary that th be elected to- night. Capt. Powell suggested that the whole ma'- ler of vice presidents be referred to the com- muttee who had just reported. Capt. Gary supported Capt. Powell's mo- tion The question as to the selection of a vice president trom each State, a secretary, two @ssiatant secretaries, an treasurer, was re- ferred toa select committee composed of the two committees who perfected the union. Japt. J.C. But by constant vigilance the officers are able to detect many of the law- Jess and bring them to justice. Yesterday, officers King and Pool arrested Lewis Lyles, colored, upon a charge of assault and battery, and the larceny ofa violin. He was dismissed im these cases, and fined $10 for disorderly conduct. (Geo. Johnson, Chas. Johnson, and Geo. Proctor, were also arrested and fined S10 for disorderly conduct. The combustible material of which the house was constructed | burnt rapidly, and the upper story of the house and part of the furniture was destroyed, but the firemen succeeded in saying the lower part of bouse without allowing it to be entered. The loss by the damage to the build- | ing it not very heavy, and the furniture was imsured. There is but little doubt but that this fire was the work of an incendiary. It ‘will be remembered that abouta month since | an incendiary attempt was made at the same place. ——_e—___.
