Scands! about Reyaity. The recent marriage of the Queen’s daugh- ter, the Priveess Helena, has given rise to much unpirasant gossip about the Uourt, and bas caured great indignation mg ge er busband, Prince Ubristian, is stated to be forty-two years of age, hile she is scarcely turned twenty, and be is so unfortnaate as to hove another wife living, a German Coun'ess, with whom be contracted a morg :naiie Marri- ape Many years ago, and by whom Sie fins ied a large iamily. The English people have very old-fasBioned notions about martiage, they consider tnat when & man has sworn before the altar to cleave to his wilt, the woman then present that he is denarred from tekibg Smother before death the divorce rt Bas released bim from the first, Th esnnot take s German Prince's view of roatier. tbat ine first marriage was only such 19 & “Prekwickan sense,” because the first Wile was not of royal bleed. The enormity of she offense is increased by the fact that he is.a Beggar'y Prince, whose apuual income does Bot exceed 31.000 per ABDum, and that he has lived for many years on the bounty of his wife, the couniess. Fast previous to. the marriage, he was shont to be arrested by certain London tradesmen whom he had favored with orders ior jewelry, cigars, and clothes, when, fortu- nately, fe was saved by the generosity of a member ofthe Royal family, who wished to recerve the family honor. For a jong time ine Prinée of Wales refused to countenance the ‘weading by his presence; and after his consent was obtained, he refused to give his sister away. But the Queen was equa! to the emergency, and did it herself—she had re- sofved. with the stubbornness of 3 Gaelph, that this marriage should take place. From this and other causes Queen Victoria is fast josing her popularity. This is clearly mani- tesied in the comic papers, whoridicule and sam poon ber favorites, the chiefof whom isthe Digamist, Prince Christian. Much scandal has alto been caused by her partiality to a Scotch body-servant, John Brown, who accompanies Ser wherever she goes. He is a spiritualist, and maintains his power over the waning in- tellect of “Her Kaajest: ” by bringing her Messages from her late husband—tbe Prince Consort.—London Letter. LIGHTNING FREAKS.—During the first Wunder shower, yesterday afternoon, the electric fluid-played some lastic tricks of father an alarming character atthe house of Mr. Robert A. Stevens, near Evergreen Ceme- tery. The house is provided with .a substan- nal rod, and the Quid came in coptact with the building at 4 point about fifteen feet from it. The fou:lding was struck on the northeast corner. at about fourteen feet trom the ground, ana, descending on the inside, took different Girections. Qne sliver of lightning appeared to take lovingly to the casement of the win- dow, and cut off a strip about one-half inch #quare; then took to the window weights, and twence shot throngh the floor of the stoop out- side the house, and going through the floor, passed into the cellar and divided itself across the cellar-wall—one-half ,passimg into the celiar-part, and the other haif imto the base- ment, where were 2 daughter of Mr. Stevens, and another young lady, who were ironing. Here was seen a ball of fire, which moved past Miss Stevens, singing the side of her head, abe going out of the back door. The other half ot the belt took an exactly Opposite course, and lost itself some where in- side of the front cellar. The bolt or fire-ball which scorched Miss Stevens, after passing eutthe door, followed lengthwise the door- sulla piece, and attached itself to the water- ¢onductor, which rans down throngh the ground about fifteen feet, and followed it up some ten feet, raising up the ground as thouch a mole bad been at work, and at the end of the cemductor it came out, throwing up the ground in every direction, ing @ small bole as ifbored with a machine. ‘he parlor Moor was littered with fine splinters from the ‘window casing, and there wasa strong smell of smoke and sulpher in the t. The TO@ Was a good one and in good order, and it ap ‘WAs no sortof protection. It was at- to the building by insalacors of glass, in the most proved method. Nx@RO SUPERSTITION 1n MoBILE.—For sev- eral days pasta very tough story hasbeen in eireajation, and is gainimg credence among the negroes and creating a heavy sensation. ‘The heroine of {the stery lives on State street. one door from Dearborn, in an old board shanty. She is a negro -woman of about twenty ot age. She is represented as giving ih to live frogs and snakes, and the reptiles are preserved ina glass jar. Having beard a great dea! about it, we resolved to ascertain the tacts. We found a large crowd Of negroes atthe bouse, and after being con- ducted to the presence of the sick woman, she iirmly maintained that all we had heard was strickly true. She came from ihe country about three weeks ago, and says that she must bave bad the reptiles given to her in the shape of powders. Herstory, however. is very in- coherent, and we felt satisfi after hearing all they bad to say, that it is a Hindoo bum- bug, gotten up to swindle the negroes. The old begro doctor who attends her is known by the pame of Hindoo Jobn, but the woman told us the did not know bis name or where he lived, and never saw bim before he was called in. The old negro woman in attendance “ler tbe cat out of the bag.” as we believe, by a re- mark to the effect that the girl's fathe: ten - ded bereafter to charge filty cents admission to the “menagerie.” But strange as it may seem, the woman is apparently in great agony, and sbe expects s further addition to the “peculiar family."— Register. T di RaTTLeswakE Guarwinc TreKres—A Very strange and novel occurrence tok place on the Sinnemaboning, near Wistar, Pa, 2 sbort time since, yet its truthfulness can be vouched fer by Mr. R. W. The at m Of @ resident of that place (Mr. Mc land) was attracted to a yard in the rear of his house, where a large flock of turkeys were congregating. u tering wild and discordant cries and flutterinz in the | greatest consternation. Mr. McCleliand quickly despatched the bold intruder, and the turkey was set at jioerty: but strange to record, with its eyes so trans- fixed that st was upable to move ahead m a direct hee and a= ired from its vanquished foe moved off obliquely with ashabling gait. At dusk of the same day a snake equally as Jarge as the one destroyed came into the same man’s door-yard, and began calling for his ab- sent mate by rat’ loudly.
