THE EVENING STAR. Girl Rams Away From Her Heme with @ Lever. whe Marries and Deserts Her. [From the Pittsburg Gazette.} Mary Me'vin, a veung and sink @am-e}, made her appearancea: Doa- aid ou- 0. COORD SSturday, and .iter being auly SWord, MSse Lue vio wing statement: at two Montds since, while atthe home of her parents im Centralia, Illinois, she made the ac- eaintarce of a young man named Frank erron, then employed as check agent on the Southern branch of — wont: Soe read. After a time Herron disposition to pay the lover-like attentions to the deponent. This fact became known to her parents, when her father ordered her to dis- muss Herron on bis usual visit, and determined to forbid bim -the hense in case she refused to comply with this tal order. On the oc- easion of Herron’s next visit Miss Melvin in. formed him of juon her parents had expressed to nis sui, and requeste i him no: to ceme to the house any more, but agreed to meet bim on the folowing Sunday evening ata place called Odin, some six or seven miles distant, on the line of the Ohio and Mississippi Rail- road, where they p’ to Dave an uninter- rupted talk over eir matual difficulties. According to the agreement the twain met in Ocin, and forthwith engaged Toom in the botes for the pu! of passing the day in each other's society. theevening, Mary proposed returning to Centralia, but Herron the opposed proposition, stating that her father nad been informed of her whereabouts and would asa matter © comrse be greatly incensed at her con- duct. This had the effect of frightening the girl some exient apd finally at the entreaty of Herron she consented to go with him to Cin- cippati, where they were to be married imme- diateiy on their arrival. On reaching the Queen City they put up at the Pemberton House on Breadwey, where they were mar- Tied. The third day after the nuptial cere- mony Herron left his bride, stating he was coming to this city to go into business, and nd for her in the course of a week. A few after she received a letter from him dated Darrisbure, but postmarked Pittsburg. in which he informed her that he had a wife in Schenectady, New York, and therefore their marriag? was null and void. He concluded the cool epistie by advising her to return to ber parents. Believing Herron to be in this city, the betrayed girl procured a loan from a lady boarder at the Pemberton House, to whom she made known her situation, and taking the evening train at Cincinnati, arrived in this city on Saturday afternoon. Desirous of hav- ing Herron arrested for his baseness, she in- quired for a magistrate’s effice. and was shown to that of Alderman Donaldson, who issued a ‘warrant for the arrest of Herron on a charge of desertion. If the above story be true, it shows a@ want of discretion on the part of the girl whicb is almost criminal, while words are inadequate toexpress the contempt we feel for her de- ceiver. Miss Melvin, or Mrs. Herron, is quite yeung, not more than seventeen, and doubtless belongs to a numerous class, who set aside the advice of their friends ana become victims of Jove-sick sentimentalism. The Empty Cradle. There isa whole volume of poetry in the following little sketch, which we find in the dJast number of Miss Barbel’s Weekly: We met Jobn on the stairs. He was carry- ing an old cradie to be stored away among what he termed “plunder,” in the Inmber- Toom. Une rocker was gone, and the wicker- work of the eides broken; it was an old wihowy affair, but we could not refrain from casting & look into itsempty po em “Gone!” we said dreamily, “all gone!” What golden heads once pillowed here—heads on which tbe curls ty! moist in slumber, and the cheeks and lips flushed the hue of rose jeaves. When broke, the silken-fringed lids opened heavily from the slumbrous eye; smiles fitted like sunbeams over the face: the white fist was thrust into the mouth: when mamma lifted the muslin ot pecned ato see ifthe baby was awake! The little feet began to kick, out Cay oe delight, and kicked on until both of the tiny red shoes were landed at the foot of the cradie.. Where are those heads bow? sheeok sen ae verapamil vigor- ous man! are ing-on battle-fields; some are bleached with time and cares: and the feet ave grown sore and weary on the rouch paths of life. Perbaps some little one, once - tender: rocked bere, is sleeping m the coffin. Over it row the heartsease, and vigorous box, and ‘te candy tuft, and thestarry jessamine. The e-bird flutters its bright wings through the ‘iiiow boughs, amd the cool summer wind ‘whispers to the green leaves and grass blades on the grave." What of? — of its im- mortality. Sleep om,littkedreamlessone! «Of such is the kingdom of Heaven!” A New THEORY ABOUT . NUISANCES.—In New York, the Health Board have at length got fo work abating anuisance that was greatly complained of—the fat-meliing establishments. But scarcely had the. work begun, when the owners of one of these places applied for an injunction im the New York Court of Common Pleas, and it was decreed, on the ground that there was & stock 5,000 pounds of fat om hand, which, if pot used, would decompose, and thus create a greater nuisance thanever. The New York Heaith officers must be in a strange di- Jemma, aceording to this decision, for the nui- sence of melting fat is suddenly overtopped by this great nuisance of not melting it. Of course, the remedy of carting the fat out of the city limits never presented itself to our usually far seeing neighbors. ANOTHER SWINDLER AMONG THE NEGroRs. A man named Winston recently went to Beal- | ton Station, Va.,on the Ohio and Alexandria Railroad, representing himself as a@ teacher employed by the Bureau to instruct the ne- groes. Oneof the negroes, pleased with the | Proposition, invired Wio to his house, where he remained until following Sun- day, when he attended a fungral meeting, and took up 4 collection -only to puy the logs tor the school-house.” The Bureau would pay the teacher. He collected a considerable sum from the beard-earned savings of the negroes, and then borrowed a horse from another negro to go to the saw-mill to buy the logs. Winston and the horee have not been heard of since. 87 A St. Louisan at Harvard, writing of the characteristics of Boston, says: “Another act in the play is. the quiet, self-possessed look of the male population in a car, when a lady en- ters to find every place taken. Some look up irom their paper as much as tosay, “I wish you had a seat,” and them resume their read- ing. 1 baveseema car full of gentlemen all seated, and four or five ladies standing up in the center of it, holding to the straps: and ifone of the gentiemen gives a lady his seat, it is sone Bpon as beimg rather verdant instead of te. ———— Tux Coal Qvestion x ENGLAND.—The ex- bah of coal, culm, and cinders from Great ritain for the first four months of the current year reached 2, 915.577 tons. In the corres- ponding period of 1865 the-exports were but 2,674,049 toms. The increase has been prine:- pally in the exports to Russia, France, Spain, taly and other continental markets, in conse- quence of the imminence of war. France took = , = months 576,471 tons, having taken uring corres Tied of 1665 but 501,630 tons. = &7 Some time ago Prince Frederick Charles, bow the victorious Prussian General, wrote aud printed a pamphlet the object of which Was to spow how French are to be beaten. substance it maintained that the secret of abe military success of the French lay in their being drilled to celerity of movement in the field.
