_THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation im the District. ‘W: D. WALLACH, Editor and Proprietor. | THE INCOME TAX. safene2 8 NAMES OF THE TAX-PAYERS. : Jol iiss . Mr. Pearson, the Assessor for lnternal Rev- enue for this District, has completed his lists of incomes for last year, and the Uolléctor, Mr. Clephane, is now ready to receive the tax un | the same. There are a few persons Who, as yet, have not returned their statements, as re- quired by law. *, The work in the offices of the wey and Collector is very arduoys, but both these of- ficers have able assistance, and there can be bat few evasions of the law owing tothe thorough manner in which the work is carried ont. The offices are at No. 463 7th @eet, in one building, (quite convenient to each other.) the Assessor being located on the first floor, and the Collector on the second. ‘The ‘business of CIRCULATION OF THE CITY PRESS. | 14, Conector's office is conducted by L. It is stated that the best of feeling continues to prevail between France and Prussia; that Austria is not only to lose the Holstein-Schleswig provinces and Venetia, but the Southern Tyrol: and that she is to be excluded from the German Confederation, which was to be placed under the control et Prussia. Thus Austria, already bankrupt; her troops despondent and disheartened at the un. | paralleled succesess achieved by Prussian arms in a short campaign of fifteen days; and threat- ened with insurrections in more than one of her provinces, seems to be at the mercy of her enemies. The only hope expressed by her triends is that she will find it easier to replen- ish her srmies than Prussia, and thas regain something of what she has lost. Even if this hope fails she need not despair, as the great European Mowers are too jealous of each other to allow any one to aggrandize itself at the ex- pense of the others without a struggle to main- | tain the equi’ibrium. Already the Russian Bear is aroused, and preparing to fake a part in the contest for supremacy. Napoleon and Bismark are playing a bold game. but it is too early to judge with what success. Since writing the above. we have later intel- ligence by the Hibernian, showing that the Prussians have defeated the Federal army. and are marching on Frankfort: also, that tne Prus- fian beadquarters have been advanced to | Brupn. Vienna is threa ened, and the next steamer may bring intelligence that the capi- tal of Austria has been captured This looks as if there is no prospect of even the short- lived peace which was expected to result from | the negotiations ip progress. treet. THE Halt Storm.—Last night about © o'clock a storm from the northeast, with hail, Tain. inCessant flashes of lightming, and heavy thunder, visited the city. The heaviest of the hail seemed to pass immediately through the the center of the city, and caused considerable anxiety among those whose gardens were ex- posed toit. The hail stones were large, and the wind drove them with considerable force against the windows and shutters of dwel- lings, breaking a number of glasses. The rain which accompanied and followed the hail seems to have done considerable es- pecially in the eastern section of thecity. Sev- enth street east, south of Pennsylvania avenue, was flooded, and the gutters, including por- tions of the curb and brick oben torn up. The basement walls of a house belonging to Mr. Nailor, at the corner of 7th and G streets south, were broken in by a flood, and several “OE near by no fohp dpa on 6th and L sts. was destroyed, an pavemen® gutter and curbing on L st. south, between 6th ard 7th street. were washed away. The cul- vert at 14th and K street, the gutter on 1 street, between 9th and 7th streets, and the pavement and gutters on 11th street, between andO, were also washed away. The gutter, curbing and some of the pavement on Ist street east, between C and D north, were carried off. The bridge over the branch crossing North Capitol street, above New York avenue, (on the road to Glenwood,) the foundations of which were ‘weakened on Saturday night, was also washed away. Aside from the damagethe flood gave the canal a thorough cleansing, as well asa number of the sewers, and in the canal, near 3d street, quite a large amount of gravel was washed from the Botanical Gardens. From some of the farmers northeast of the city we learn that the hail was very heavy, and much corn was torn to strips in various fields. The effect will be to lessen the supply of todder on some of the farms, but the grain is not materially damaged. The proceedings in both houses of Con, (which were in session at the time) were in- terrupted by the rattling of the hail-stones on the be roof, which was so loud as to render the voices of the speakers inaudible. A bat was forced into the Senate chamber by the stress of weather, where his rapid and eecen- tric flight over and near the exposed heads of the grave and reverend seignors was the cause of some commotion and no little mirth. ——S es VALUABLE CnUrch BELLS ror Wasuinec- ToN.—There have just been completed at the foundry of Mr. Joshua Regester, Holiday street, near Saratoga, three large church bells forthe Koman Catholic Oburch of St. Aloy- sius, Washington, D.C., which will be sent there in afew days.
